The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has launched an investigation into an allegation made by Nigerian rapper Oladipupo Oladimeji, popularly known as Oladips, who accused some of the commission’s operatives of extorting ₦10 million from him during his detention in 2024.
Oladips made the claim during an interview on the Trending podcast, where he recounted being arrested along with several residents of his estate in Lagos during an EFCC midnight raid in November 2024.
The rapper said he spent five days in custody before being released, despite no incriminating evidence being found against him.
“They collected ₦10 million from me before they released me. They didn’t find anything on me. So, what was the money for? What was all that stress and suffering for? It’s just Nigeria. Nigeria just happened to me,” he said.
Reacting to the claim, the EFCC issued a statement via its official X (formerly Twitter) handle on Saturday, describing the allegation as “grave and deserving of urgent inquiry.”
According to the agency, all operatives involved in Oladips’ arrest have been summoned to the EFCC headquarters and relieved of operational duties pending the outcome of the investigation.
“The Commission wishes to state unreservedly that the grim picture painted by the artist does not reflect the true character of the EFCC.
We have seen his claims and have commenced investigations accordingly,” the statement read.
The EFCC reaffirmed its commitment to integrity, transparency, and accountability, vowing to take decisive action against any officers found guilty of misconduct.
However, the commission also cautioned that if the rapper’s allegations are discovered to be false or malicious, it would take appropriate measures against him as well.
“If the allegation is found to be false and raised to malign the Commission or tarnish its image, appropriate sanctions will also be imposed,” the EFCC warned.
The agency urged Nigerians to remain patient and await the outcome of its investigation, assuring the public of its continued dedication to combating economic and financial crimes across the country.
