Ghana Scholarships Secretariat Probed Over Alleged Misuse of Funds for Spouses and Dependents

The Registrar of the Ghana Scholarships Secretariat, Alex Kwaku Asafo-Agyei, has raised serious concerns about questionable practices in the administration of scholarship funds during the tenure of his predecessor, Dr. Kingsley Agyemang. Speaking in an interview on Nhyira FM’s Kuro Yi Mu Nsem, Mr. Asafo-Agyei alleged that, beyond covering tuition and living expenses for students abroad, the Secretariat also extended full financial support to the spouses and children of some beneficiaries—a move he described as highly problematic. “What happened at the Secretariat was that when a student was awarded a scholarship, their wife and children were also added as dependents,” he explained. “The Secretariat paid for their visa processes, air tickets, and even allocated stipends. There are memos with official approval confirming these payments.” He cited a specific case involving Mr. Peter Mensah, who received a scholarship in January 2022 […]

Ghana Small-Scale Gold Exports Hit $6.3 Billion in 2025, Surpassing 2024 Output

Ghana’s small-scale gold sector has posted a record-breaking performance, with exports between January and August 2025 reaching 66.7 tonnes, valued at approximately $6.3 billion. The figures, announced by the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod), Sammy Gyamfi, surpass the entire small-scale output for 2024, which stood at 63 tonnes worth $4.6 billion. Mr. Gyamfi made the announcement at the maiden Mining and Minerals Convention in Accra on Tuesday, September 9. He credited the achievement to GoldBod’s collaboration with the Bank of Ghana and reforms designed to strengthen accountability, reduce smuggling, and ensure fair pricing for small-scale miners. “From January to the end of August 2025, small-scale gold exports facilitated by GoldBod, in close cooperation with the Bank of Ghana, hit a record 66.7 tonnes, valued at approximately $6 billion. This volume and value have already exceeded the […]

AAMUSTED Launches Academic Journals to Bridge Research and Policy in Ghana

The Akenten Appiah-Menka University of Skills Training and Entrepreneurial Development (AAMUSTED) has launched two academic journals to promote research and innovation for national development. The journals, titled the Journal of Technology Education and Applied Science (JTEAS) and the Journal of Applied Social Science & Entrepreneurship Education (JASSEE), are designed to make research accessible to policymakers, educators, and entrepreneurs. Speaking at the launch in Kumasi, Professor Isaac Boateng, Pro Vice Chancellor of AAMUSTED, emphasized that these journals aim to close the gap between academics and policymakers. He noted that many valuable research works end up in paid international journals or in university libraries, making it difficult for politicians and decision-makers to access. “These journals will create a free platform where findings can be shared to guide development,” he said. Prof. Boateng added that the initiative will also help preserve indigenous technical […]

Assembly Members vs Chief Justice: Who Has More Legal Protection in Ghana?

On September 1, 2025, the President of the Republic signed a warrant removing the suspended Chief Justice, Her Ladyship Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkoono. Her removal has sparked widespread debate over the legality of the process. Article 146 of the 1992 Constitution has become the subject of heated discussions, with lawyers, politicians, civil society, and even “pocket lawyers” arguing for or against its proper application. In my earlier article, I explained why the removed Chief Justice could not return to serve as a Justice of the Supreme Court. In this piece, I argue that an elected Assembly Member is, by law, better protected from removal than even the Chief Justice, who heads the Judiciary—the third arm of government. Article 146(1) clearly sets the grounds for removing a Justice of the superior courts or a tribunal chairman: stated misbehavior, incompetence, or […]

Illegal Miners Seize $168m Gold Mine Concession in Adansi, Ashanti Region

he future of what could become the second-largest mine in the Adansi enclave of the Ashanti Region is now in jeopardy after illegal miners forcibly seized over 200 acres of concession land. The site, secured by Mining and Construction Services for underground mining, has been overrun by groups allegedly led by the NDC Vice Chairman for Obuasi West, Alhaji Zamba. The illegal operators, equipped with excavators, are conducting unsustainable mining and digging trenches, leaving staff of the legal operators threatened and driven away. Managing Director Andy Amoah recounted how his team was forced to stop operations despite holding valid documentation. He explained that although the company had secured all necessary licenses and even gained clearance from National Security operatives, the illegal miners refused to vacate the concession, insisting the land was allocated to communities under the John Mahama administration. In […]

Abossey Okai Spare Parts Dealers Issue 3-Day Ultimatum to Foreign Traders

The Abossey Okai Spare Parts Dealers Association has given foreign traders operating in the enclave three days to close their shops or face enforcement action. According to the Association, the activities of these traders violate Ghana’s investment laws, distort fair competition, and threaten the survival of local businesses. Speaking at a press conference in Accra, the General Secretary, Gifty Lovelock Naana Fianu, explained that if authorities fail to act, the group will enforce Section 27(1) of the GIPC Act, 2013 (Act 865), including through citizens’ arrest if necessary. “We are giving them three days. Today, we will go round and speak with them politely to ensure they understand. On Wednesday, we will engage their leaders. If they refuse to listen, we will involve the authorities,” she said. She added that letters would be sent to the police and other relevant […]

BECE Not Credible, Ghana Christian High Dropped It Over a Decade Ago: Prof. Stephen Adei

Renowned educationist Prof. Stephen Adei has revealed that his school, Ghana Christian International High School, stopped using the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) more than a decade ago as an admission requirement because of credibility concerns. Speaking on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show during a discussion on the Hotline Documentary: Dark World of BECE, Prof. Adei said the decision was driven by widespread cheating and malpractice. “For 11 years, Ghana Christian International High School in Accra has not used BECE as an entrance requirement because we don’t trust them,” he stated. He noted that although WAEC continues to introduce measures such as monitoring teams, arrests, and cancellation of results, the efforts remain inadequate. According to him, corruption within the system has weakened enforcement. He argued that cheating in exams reflects the broader moral decay in Ghana, citing political bribery, illegal […]

Minerals Commission Confirms Investor Interest in Goldfields Damang Mines

The Acting Chief Executive of the Minerals Commission, Isaac Andrews Tandoh, has confirmed that several investors have submitted proposals for the possible takeover of the Goldfields Damang Mines. He noted that government is currently reviewing the proposals and a decision will soon be taken by the sector minister. Speaking on PM Express Business Edition on September 4, 2025, Mr. Tandoh assured that government will choose the option that best serves Ghanaians and the mining communities. “We are not biased toward any party. What we are looking for is the best outcome for the people and host communities,” he stressed. A committee has been set up to oversee the transition once Goldfields’ one-year extension ends in April 2026. Parliament approved the transitional mining lease in July 2025 under strict non-renewable terms. The lease prohibits any extension, transfer, or related transactions beyond […]
