Government Allocates GH¢1 Billion to End Double-Track in Senior High Schools

The government has announced a GH¢1 billion allocation to phase out the double-track system in senior high schools across Ghana. The Education Minister, Haruna Iddrisu, revealed this plan during the inauguration of a new staff accommodation facility at Accra Girls’ Senior High School. The investment, expected to feature in next year’s budget, will be sourced from the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund) and directed toward addressing long-standing infrastructure deficits in the education sector. The double-track system was first introduced in the 2018/2019 academic year as a temporary solution to manage overcrowding in schools after the Free SHS policy significantly increased enrolment. Students were divided into two groups who alternated in cycles, making it possible to maximize existing facilities. While it provided a short-term fix, the system was never intended as a permanent feature. Haruna Iddrisu explained that the proposed investment […]

Ghana MP Petitions Diplomats Over Wave of Arrests

The Member of Parliament for Old Tafo, Vincent Ekow Assafuah of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has petitioned the diplomatic community over what he calls an alarming wave of arrests under the current government. In a strongly worded letter addressed to the Dean of the Diplomatic Corps in Ghana, he argued that the country has been plunged into a climate of fear where citizens are punished for expressing dissenting views. Mr. Assafuah urged the international community to intervene and encourage the government to uphold Ghana’s democratic values. According to him, the arrests reflect a troubling culture of intimidation that undermines the rule of law and basic freedoms. “I humbly petition your high office to take urgent note of the disturbing developments currently unfolding in our country, Ghana, since the assumption of office by the NDC government on 7 January 2025,” […]

Bawku factions sign peace pact in Ashanti Region

Indigenes of Bawku living in the Ashanti Region have signed a peace pact aimed at preventing the long-standing Kusaasi–Mamprusi conflict from spreading into Kumasi. The development comes in the wake of violent clashes in Asawase and Asokore Mampong that claimed two lives, including that of a local chief, sparking fears that the Bawku conflict could inflame further unrest in the Ashanti capital. The Ashanti Regional Security Council facilitated the peace agreement as part of wider efforts to maintain order while the Asantehene-led committee continues broader mediation to restore lasting peace in Bawku. A seven-member committee, made up of representatives of security agencies, first held separate meetings with both factions before bringing them together for a joint session. This dialogue culminated in the symbolic signing of the peace pact at the Ashanti Regional Police Command. Head of Public Relations at the […]

He dismissed criticisms directed at Dr. Bawumia, particularly those questioning his faith, describing claims that he cannot be President because he is a Muslim as sheer madness.
