Indonesia floods spark anger over slow aid response

Residents in Indonesia’s westernmost regions are increasingly expressing anger and desperation over what they see as a slow and inadequate government response to devastating floods that struck weeks ago. The flooding, triggered by a rare cyclone in November, swept across the island of Sumatra, killing more than 1,000 people and forcing hundreds of thousands from their homes. Aceh province was the hardest hit, accounting for nearly half of the fatalities. Many communities there continue to struggle with shortages of clean water, food, electricity and basic medical supplies. As frustration mounted, some residents began raising white flags outside their homes, a public signal of distress and a call for urgent assistance. The crisis has also placed immense pressure on local authorities, who say they lack sufficient resources to respond effectively. Earlier this month, the governor of North Aceh, Ismail A Jalil, […]

Can science really cure Alzheimer’s disease?

Watching brain surgery raises a profound question: is Alzheimer’s disease an unsolvable puzzle, or can science eventually defeat it? At the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary, cutting-edge dementia research begins inside an operating theatre. A patient lies sedated as surgeons prepare to remove a brain tumour that spread from colon cancer. On large screens, MRI images reveal the mass deep within the brain, far from the surface. To reach it, neurosurgeons must pass through the cortex, the brain’s outer layer responsible for memory, language and thought. Using extreme precision, Professor Paul Brennan drills a small opening in the skull and carefully removes a tiny section of cortex. In most hospitals, this tissue would be discarded. Here, with the patient’s consent, it becomes a valuable resource for Alzheimer’s research. That small piece of living brain tissue is placed immediately into ice-cold artificial cerebrospinal […]

Deadly storms trigger floods and mudslides in California

Severe rainstorms sweeping across large areas of California have caused flooding and mudslides, leaving at least three people dead as of Christmas night, according to local authorities. The storms, driven by multiple atmospheric rivers, have dumped heavy rainfall across the state and were forecast to continue through Friday. In parts of Los Angeles County, rainfall totals reached up to 11 inches (27 cm), overwhelming drainage systems, triggering evacuations, and forcing the closure of major highways. Emergency services have carried out numerous rescue operations, including saving motorists trapped in vehicles as floodwaters rapidly rose. In response to the deteriorating conditions, California Governor Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency on Wednesday for Los Angeles and several other southern California counties. Power outages were widespread, with around 100,000 residents across the state without electricity as of Thursday evening. The US Weather Prediction […]

Turkey arrests over 100 IS suspects ahead of New Year

Turkish security forces have arrested more than 100 people suspected of links to the so-called Islamic State (IS) group, authorities said, describing the operation as a move to prevent planned attacks during the Christmas and New Year period. According to the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office, coordinated raids were carried out at 124 locations across the city. During the operations, police seized firearms, ammunition and documents believed to be connected to the organisation’s activities. Officials said intelligence indicated that IS supporters had been actively preparing attacks in several parts of Turkey, with particular focus on public celebrations and locations associated with non-Muslim communities. A total of 115 suspects were taken into custody, while security services are continuing efforts to locate 22 additional individuals believed to be involved. The prosecutor’s office added that the detained suspects were in communication with IS […]

Nouvel An : autorités locales appelées à la vigilance

Togo’s 60-Year Struggle and the Rise of M66

For six decades, the Togolese people have lived under a political system that many describe as stagnant and unresponsive to their daily struggles. Beyond domestic governance, critics argue that inconsistent international diplomacy has also contributed to prolonging the crisis, often prioritising stability over genuine democratic reform. As a result, calls are growing for renewed global engagement that supports meaningful change and addresses the roots of Togo’s long-standing challenges. Across the country, daily life reflects a deep sense of fatigue and disillusionment. Markets remain lively, yet the optimism that once defined them has faded. Conversations among citizens increasingly reveal frustration over the widening gap between official promises and lived realities. For many, each new day brings not hope, but a reminder of unmet expectations and limited prospects for progress. Young people are bearing the brunt of this situation. Education, traditionally seen […]

Cameroon, Algeria and Ivory Coast start AFCON strong

Cameroon opened their Africa Cup of Nations campaign with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Gabon in Agadir, putting behind them a turbulent build-up to the tournament. Karl Etta Eyong’s early strike proved decisive, while Algeria, Ivory Coast and Burkina Faso also started their group-stage journeys with wins on Wednesday. The Indomitable Lions arrived at the competition amid confusion and controversy. After Belgian coach Marc Brys was dismissed in unclear circumstances, local coach David Pagou was appointed to lead the team. However, Brys publicly claimed he had not been formally informed of his removal and even announced his own squad for the tournament. Matters were further complicated when Pagou unveiled his selection, leaving out established stars such as André Onana, Vincent Aboubakar and Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting. The Cameroonian Football Federation (FECAFOOT) eventually clarified the situation, but combined with the injury of […]
