Biden’s reelection bid ‘reckless’, says Harris in new memoir

Former US vice president Kamala Harris has described allowing Joe Biden to seek a second term in office as “recklessness,” according to an excerpt from her upcoming memoir, 107 Days, published Wednesday by The Atlantic. Harris, who stepped in as the 2024 Democratic presidential candidate after Biden dropped out but later lost to Donald Trump, said Biden’s age and declining stamina were clear concerns at the time. “‘It’s Joe and Jill’s decision.’ We all said that, like a mantra, as if we’d all been hypnotised. Was it grace, or was it recklessness? In retrospect, I think it was recklessness,” Harris wrote. She argued that the decision should not have been left solely to Biden’s “ego” or “ambition,” given the stakes of the election. Biden’s withdrawal and age concerns Biden, then 81, ended his reelection campaign in July 2024 after a […]

NIWA to recruit 800 water marshals to boost safety nationwide

The National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) has announced plans to recruit and deploy 800 water marshals across Nigeria by December 2025. According to NIWA’s Managing Director, Mr. Bola Oyebamiji, the move is aimed at improving safety, curbing incessant boat mishaps, enforcing life jacket compliance, and monitoring unauthorised loading points. Speaking to newsmen on Wednesday in Abuja, Oyebamiji said the marshals would also be tasked with sensitising passengers and operators on safe navigation practices. “The Federal Government is doing a wonderful job on water safety. We currently have between 350 and 450 water marshals, but the goal is to increase the number to ensure authorised jetties across the country have more than one marshal to enforce safety rules,” he said. He disclosed that NIWA already had four to five monitoring teams, including task forces, deployed across waterways in riverine areas to […]

Kemi Badenoch warns UK risks repeat of 1976 IMF bailout crisis

Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch has warned that Britain could face a humiliating International Monetary Fund (IMF) bailout, drawing stark parallels with the 1976 sterling crisis. In a BBC interview, cited by PUNCH Online on Tuesday, Badenoch expressed concern that Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s Labour government was steering the country into a “doom loop” of high taxes, fragile public finances, and soaring borrowing costs. She argued that without a robust economic growth plan, the UK risked sliding into fiscal ruin that might force it to seek emergency international aid. “We are not growing enough. If Labour continues with no plan for growth, we’ll end up going to the IMF cap in hand,” Badenoch said. Her comments come amid heightened market jitters, with UK borrowing costs recently hitting a 27-year high before easing. Labour hit back sharply, branding Badenoch’s intervention “astonishing hypocrisy.” […]
