Burkina Faso Scraps Visa Fees for All African Nationals

Burkina Faso has announced the abolition of visa fees for all African citizens, a move aimed at deepening Pan-African solidarity and promoting free movement across the continent. The country’s Minister of Security, Mahamadou Sana, revealed the decision on Thursday following a cabinet meeting chaired by military leader Captain Ibrahim Traoré. “From now on, any citizen from an African country wishing to go to Burkina Faso will not pay any amount to cover visa fees,” Sana stated. He clarified that while the charges have been scrapped, travellers must still complete an online application for entry approval. Citizens of West African nations already enjoy visa-free access to Burkina Faso. However, the latest move comes amid uncertainty over the country’s status in the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), which Burkina Faso quit earlier this year alongside Mali and Niger. Kano Moves to Criminalise Same-Sex Marriage, ‘Immoral Practices’

The Kano State Government has approved the transmission of a bill to the House of Assembly seeking to criminalise same-sex marriage and other practices deemed immoral in the state. Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf gave the approval during the 31st Executive Council meeting held at the Government House Annexe in Kwankwasiyya City, according to a statement issued Friday by his spokesperson, Sanusi Dawakin-Tofa. Kano, one of Nigeria’s most populous northern states, operates under Sharia law alongside the Nigerian Constitution. Since the early 2000s, when Sharia was formally introduced, successive administrations have enforced strict regulations on morality, culture, and religion. Nigeria already prohibits same-sex unions under the Same-Sex Marriage (Prohibition) Act of 2014, which prescribes up to 14 years in prison. However, northern states like Kano often pursue stricter enforcement aligned with Islamic teachings. The governor emphasised his administration’s resolve to uphold […]

Rosemary DiCarlo, UN Under-Secretary-General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs, told the Security Council on Thursday that the world was “shocked” by the attack, which reportedly targeted individuals gathered to discuss the latest U.S.-backed proposal for a ceasefire and hostage release deal in Gaza. “The sovereignty and territorial integrity of any country, including Qatar — a valued partner in advancing peacemaking and conflict resolution — must be respected,” DiCarlo said. She stressed that Qatar, alongside Egypt and the United States, had been playing a pivotal role in brokering a truce, adding: “We are deeply grateful for Qatar’s steadfast commitment and constructive diplomacy. All parties must act to preserve these efforts.” […]
