Nearly Three Years After Coup, Fate Of Niger’s Ousted President Still Unclear

Nearly three years after a military coup removed him from power, Niger’s ousted president Mohamed Bazoum remains in detention with his future still uncertain. His presidential term is due to officially expire this week, but there is little sign he will be freed or brought before a court. Bazoum was toppled on July 26, 2023, when members of his presidential guard seized power and formed the National Council for the Safeguard of the Homeland. Since then, he has been held inside his residence at the presidential palace in Niamey alongside his wife, with no access to the outside world. According to his legal team, the 65 year old leader is “still held in the same place and in the same conditions,” with doors and windows sealed and no visits from family, lawyers or supporters. Human Rights Watch and other groups […]

Court Adjourns El Rufai’s Bail Hearing Till Wednesday

The Federal High Court in Kaduna has adjourned the hearing of the bail application filed by former Kaduna State governor Nasir El Rufai till Wednesday. The adjournment means the ex governor will remain in custody while the court considers arguments from both sides. El Rufai is facing corruption related charges brought by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission. He is accused of money laundering, misuse of public funds and abuse of office during his eight year tenure as governor. Justice Joyce Obehi Abdulmalik, who presided over Tuesday’s proceedings, announced the new date after listening to submissions from the prosecution and defence counsels. According to battlefield monitoring group ACLED, hundreds of strikes have now been recorded in at least 26 of Iran’s 31 provinces since the war escalated. Tehran, Isfahan and several western and southern regions have been among the hardest hit areas. An update from the Critical Threats Project said Israeli jets struck multiple missile and drone production facilities in Tehran on March 29. Targets included a Defence Ministry missile engine plant, a drone engine factory and an air defence storage and production site. Tinubu Writes Senate, Seeks Approval To Borrow 5 Billion Dollars

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has written to the Nigerian Senate seeking approval to borrow an additional 5 billion dollars from external sources. The fresh request is part of the wider 2024–2026 external borrowing plan aimed at funding infrastructure and plugging budget deficits. In his letter to Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Tinubu said the new facility would support key sectors such as transport, power, agriculture, health and education. He argued that concessional and semi concessional loans remained vital to delivering priority projects at a time of revenue constraints. The Senate had earlier approved a 21.5 billion dollar external borrowing plan for the 2025–2026 period. The latest 5 billion dollar request is expected to be processed under the same framework once lawmakers subject it to committee scrutiny and debate. Tinubu’s government has defended its borrowing strategy as necessary to stimulate growth and […]

Iran Vows Defiance As Trump Threatens To Destroy Key Oil Island

Iran has vowed to remain defiant after United States President Donald Trump threatened to destroy one of its most important oil export islands. In fresh comments, Trump warned that Kharg Island and other energy facilities could be “completely obliterated” if Tehran does not quickly agree to a deal to end the war and reopen the Strait of Hormuz to full traffic. Speaking on his Truth Social account, Trump said the US was in “serious discussions” with what he called a more reasonable regime in Tehran. But he added that if the talks fail or if the Hormuz Strait is not “open for business” immediately, Washington would blow up Iran’s electric plants, oil wells and Kharg Island, and possibly its desalination plants as well. Kharg Island handles about 90 percent of Iran’s crude oil exports and is seen as the backbone […]

Kwankwaso’s Defection To ADC: APC A Threat To Democracy – Mark

National Chairman of the African Democratic Congress, David Mark, has described Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso’s defection to the ADC as a turning point for Nigeria’s democracy. He spoke in Abuja as the former Kano State governor was formally received into the party ahead of the 2027 general elections. Mark said Kwankwaso’s move was more than a simple change of platform. He framed it as a deliberate response to Nigerians’ calls for a cohesive opposition capable of safeguarding democratic values and providing a credible alternative to the ruling All Progressives Congress. The former Senate President accused the APC of posing the greatest threat to multiparty democracy in Nigeria. He warned that attempts to weaken opposition parties, shrink political space and concentrate power in one party were dangerous for the country’s future. According to Mark, the ADC is positioning itself as a rallying […]

Daddy Freeze Says Religion Is Failing Nigerians

Media personality Ifedayo Olarinde, popularly known as Daddy Freeze, says religion is not producing real results in Nigeria and is undermining the country’s development. He made the remarks on a recent episode of The Honest Bunch Podcast, where he questioned the impact of intense religiosity on people’s lives. Daddy Freeze argued that religion, as widely practised in Nigeria, has failed to deliver the prosperity, love and good governance that many preachers promise. He asked where the supposed benefits are, noting that Nigerians often claim special favour from God yet continue to struggle with poverty, poor services and insecurity. He compared Nigeria with less religious but more developed countries such as Japan. According to him, nations that do not centre their public life on religion seem to enjoy better infrastructure, healthcare and quality of life than highly religious societies like Nigeria. […]
