Article arrow_drop_down

A 5.2‑magnitude earthquake has struck Liuzhou city in the Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region of south China, killing a couple and damaging dozens of buildings. The shallow quake hit Liunan District at about 12:21am local time on Monday, according to the China Earthquake Networks Center (CENC).

State media reported that the victims were a 63‑year‑old man and his 53‑year‑old wife, who died when their home collapsed during the tremor. At least 13 buildings were confirmed to have collapsed and more than 100 others were damaged to varying degrees, while one person remained missing as of Monday morning.

The quake, which struck at a depth of about 8km, was felt in several surrounding cities including Nanning, Guilin and Wuzhou, prompting residents to rush out of their homes in panic. Videos shared by Chinese media showed people fleeing high‑rise buildings and piles of rubble where structures had caved in.

Authorities activated a Level‑IV emergency response, dispatching rescue teams, firefighters, medical workers and search‑and‑rescue dogs to the affected areas. More than 7,000 residents were reportedly evacuated as officials moved to conduct building safety checks and provide temporary shelters.

Emergency workers are continuing search operations for the missing person and assessing the full extent of the damage. Seismologists noted that while quakes of this magnitude are considered moderate, shallow tremors close to populated areas can still cause significant destruction, especially to older or poorly built structures.

Alonso confirmed as Chelsea’s new manager

Chelsea have confirmed the appointment of Spanish coach Xabi Alonso as their new manager, handing the former Liverpool and Real Madrid midfielder a four‑year contract. The Premier League club announced that Alonso will officially assume duties on July 1, 2026, and lead the men’s first team into the new season. Alonso, 44, has been out of work since leaving Real Madrid in January after a turbulent seven‑month spell in charge at the Bernabéu. Before that, he enjoyed a hugely successful stint at Bayer Leverkusen, where he guided the German club to the first Bundesliga title in their history and built a reputation as one of Europe’s brightest young coaches. Chelsea described Alonso as “one of the most respected figures in the modern game,” saying his appointment reflects the club’s belief in his tactical acumen, leadership and integrity. He becomes the […]

African Champions League: Sundowns edge Royal Armed Forces amid faulty VAR

Mamelodi Sundowns took a slender advantage in the CAF Champions League final after edging Morocco’s Royal Armed Forces (AS FAR) 1-0 in a first leg overshadowed by a malfunctioning VAR system. The South African champions struck through left-back Aubrey Modiba, whose superb free-kick from outside the box found the net eight minutes before half-time at Loftus Versfeld in Pretoria. The match descended into farce at the start of the second half when technical issues rendered the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system unusable. Both teams were left waiting for around 20 minutes before officials decided to resume play without VAR, in what many observers branded another embarrassing episode for African football on a big stage. Sundowns could have won by a wider margin but Colombian striker Brayan León missed three clear chances early in the second half. Midfielder Teboho Mokoena then […]

China denounces Taiwan foreign minister’s Switzerland visit amid WHO meeting

China has denounced a planned visit to Switzerland by Taiwan’s foreign minister, saying the trip, timed to coincide with the World Health Organization’s annual assembly in Geneva, violates the One China principle. Beijing has already blocked Taiwan from participating in the 79th World Health Assembly (WHA) as an observer, but Taipei has vowed to send a delegation for meetings outside the official gathering. A spokesperson for China’s Foreign Ministry said Taiwan’s outreach in Switzerland amounts to “separatist” activity and accused the island’s government of using the global health forum to push for “independence under the pretext of health cooperation.” The spokesperson reiterated that the People’s Republic of China is the sole legal government representing the whole of China and that Taiwan is an “inalienable” part of its territory. China’s opposition comes after it formally informed the WHO that it would […]

Trump says Xi agrees Iran must open strait, China says war shouldn’t have started

U.S. President Donald Trump says Chinese President Xi Jinping has agreed that Iran must reopen the Strait of Hormuz, but there is still no clear sign that Beijing will directly pressure Tehran to do so. Trump spoke while flying back from Beijing after two days of talks with Xi, where the crisis over Iran and global oil supplies dominated discussions. Iran has effectively shut the vital waterway, which previously carried about one‑fifth of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas, following joint U.S. and Israeli attacks on February 28. The disruption has triggered the biggest oil supply shock in history and sent energy prices soaring, piling pressure on economies already struggling with slow growth. Trump said both leaders shared the goal of preventing Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon and of restoring safe passage through the strait. He also revealed […]

Ebola: WHO declares global health emergency as death toll hits 81 in DRC, Uganda

The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared the current Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda a public health emergency of international concern, after a sharp rise in deaths and infections. The epidemic, caused by the rarer Bundibugyo strain of the virus, has so far killed at least 81 people in both countries and triggered a global health alert. According to WHO and Africa CDC figures, as of 16–17 May 2026 the DRC’s Ituri Province has reported eight laboratory-confirmed cases, 246 suspected cases and about 80 suspected deaths across health zones including Bunia, Rwampara and Mongbwalu. Uganda has confirmed two cases — including one death — in Kampala among travellers from Congo within 24 hours of each other. WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus made the emergency declaration after consulting authorities in Kinshasa and Kampala and convening […]

Former England captain Sir David Beckham has become Britain’s first billionaire sportsman, according to the 2026 Sunday Times Rich List. The collective wealth of Beckham and his wife Victoria has surged past the billion-pound mark, reaching an estimated £1.185bn this year. The couple’s fortune has more than doubled from the £500m figure reported on the 2025 list, driven by fresh commercial deals, growing brand value and the rapid appreciation of Beckham’s stake in Major League Soccer side Inter Miami. Inter Miami, boosted by the arrival of Lionel Messi and associated commercial spin-offs, is now valued at around $1.45bn, making it MLS’s most valuable club. Beckham’s long-running endorsement portfolio, which has included partnerships with Adidas, Tudor, EA Sports and others, continues to underpin his personal brand more than a decade after his retirement from professional football. US Secretary of State Rubio denies fashion inspiration from Maduro

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has dismissed claims that he took fashion inspiration from deposed Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro after a photo of him in a grey Nike tracksuit went viral online. Rubio was photographed aboard Air Force One in the outfit while travelling with President Donald Trump to China for high-level talks. Social media users quickly noticed that the tracksuit looked similar to the Nike Tech Fleece worn by Maduro when he was captured by US forces and pictured handcuffed inside a helicopter in January. The resemblance sparked a wave of memes and comments suggesting the top US diplomat was trolling or mocking the ousted Venezuelan strongman. Responding to reporters’ questions in Beijing, Rubio laughed off the comparison and insisted there was no hidden message behind his choice of clothing. “There’s no context. It’s a nice suit,” he […]

New Zealand’s Māori Queen, Te Arikinui Kuini Nga Wai hono i te po, has met King Charles III at Buckingham Palace in London during an official visit to the United Kingdom. The meeting was the first between the two leaders since Te Arikinui became queen in 2024 following the death of her father, Kiingi Tuheitia. The visit highlights the nearly 200-year relationship between New Zealand’s Māori people and the British Crown, a connection formalised through the Treaty of Waitangi, one of New Zealand’s founding agreements. According to representatives of the Māori monarchy, the discussions were warm and emotional. Both leaders reflected on the passing of the late Māori king and spoke about strengthening ties between the Crown and the Māori community. Earlier in the week, the Māori Queen was also welcomed at Windsor Castle by Prince William. In a message […]
