Gates Foundation Urges Nigeria to Boost Funding for Non-Communicable Diseases

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has called on the Nigerian government to significantly increase funding for health programmes targeting non-communicable diseases (NCDs), warning that the country faces a growing crisis. Speaking at a Roundtable Forum in Abuja, the Foundation’s Country Director, Uche Amaonwu, stressed the need to integrate NCD care into primary healthcare and strengthen health financing policies. “In Nigeria, we’ve seen a rising burden of non-communicable diseases. This is why the roundtable is charting a new path,” Amaonwu said. He explained that the Foundation is working with life sciences partners to co-invest in health systems, shifting from isolated projects to coordinated support. He added that health access must be seen as a foundation for prosperity. “Families sell assets, cut back on education, and sacrifice opportunities just to pay medical bills. That cycle must be broken,” he said. The […]

Eleven years after 43 students from Ayotzinapa teacher training college disappeared, relatives and supporters returned to the streets of Mexico City on Friday, demanding truth and justice in a case that remains one of the country’s darkest human rights scandals. The students, known for their political activism, were last seen on September 26, 2014, after they commandeered buses to travel to a demonstration in Mexico City. So far, only the remains of three students have been identified. The whereabouts of the rest remain unknown, leaving families trapped in years of uncertainty. “We are back where we started,” said Delfina de la Cruz, whose son was among the missing. “I want to see my son, know what happened, where […]

Trump Targets More Opponents After ‘Dirty Cop’ Comey Indictment

US President Donald Trump on Friday called for more of his political rivals to face prosecution as he celebrated the indictment of former FBI director James Comey, whom he branded a “dirty cop.” The Republican leader’s remarks mark an intensification of his campaign of political retribution — an approach that breaks with decades of US precedent, where presidents avoided interfering with Justice Department cases. “Frankly I hope there are others,” Trump told reporters at the White House when asked about Comey’s indictment, describing his opponents as “corrupt, radical-left Democrats.” He rejected suggestions that his drive was fueled by vengeance. “It’s not revenge. It’s about the fact that you can’t let this go on.” Comey was charged Thursday with making false statements and obstruction of justice linked to his handling of the FBI’s 2016 probe into alleged collusion between Trump’s campaign […]

Their father, Babagana Zanna Jaridama, a social media commentator and supporter of Governor Babagana Zulum, raised alarm when his children disappeared and even offered to surrender himself in exchange for their release. In a shocking twist, Jaridama later discovered the children’s bodies inside his old Honda Civic, parked in his compound, on Thursday night. Police operatives evacuated the victims to the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH), where doctors confirmed them dead. The bodies have been deposited at the hospital mortuary for autopsy. Confirming the incident, Police Public Relations […]
