EU Environment Chief Tests Positive for ‘Forever Chemicals’

EU environment commissioner Jessika Roswall has revealed she tested positive for toxic “forever chemicals” after undergoing a screening designed to raise awareness of their health risks. “Citizens are increasingly exposed to PFAS in their blood. I myself am no exception,” Roswall told reporters on Monday while presenting new European efforts on climate and environmental protection. The commissioner said some of the chemicals found in her blood are toxic for reproductive health, adding: “This strengthened my resolve to take our work forward.” Her team confirmed that Roswall tested positive for six of the 13 PFAS screened for, including three linked to reproductive harm, with concentrations in some cases exceeding safe levels. Roswall was among several EU ministers tested in July as part of a campaign to highlight pollution from PFAS — synthetic chemicals used in products such as nonstick pans, stain-resistant […]

Tax Reforms Will Grow Nigeria’s Budget Fivefold — Speaker Abbas

Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, says President Bola Tinubu’s tax reforms will dramatically expand Nigeria’s revenue base, projecting that the national budget could grow to five times its current size within the next two years. Abbas made the remarks in Abuja during “An Evening with 004,” an informal youth engagement organised by the Office of the National Youth Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC). According to a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Leke Baiyewu, the Speaker said the Federal Government’s ongoing efforts to block revenue leakages and strengthen tax compliance will allow for more robust funding of critical projects and services. “One thing I want you to go home with is that Mr President and the National Assembly have crossed a major hurdle that has been bedevilling our budgets — paucity of revenue,” Abbas told […]

‘No Panic’ at Chelsea Despite Mini-Slump, Says Maresca Ahead of Benfica Clash

Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca insists there is “no reason to panic” over the club’s recent poor run of form, as he prepares his side for a crucial Champions League fixture against Benfica at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday. The Blues began the season strongly, lifting the FIFA Club World Cup in July, but have since lost three of their past four matches in all competitions, including their Champions League opener against Bayern Munich. Speaking at a press conference on Monday, Maresca blamed Chelsea’s disciplinary problems for the dip in results, pointing out that four of their last five defeats came after red cards. “In football, you know better than me, football is a crazy world,” Maresca said. “If you lost five games in six months and you need to say things to defend yourself, that means it’s a crazy world. I […]

UK to Tighten Rules for Migrants Seeking Permanent Stay

Migrants hoping to secure permanent residency in the UK will face stricter requirements under new plans to be unveiled by Interior Minister Shabana Mahmood on Monday. Currently, individuals with family ties who have lived in the UK for five years, or those legally residing in the country for 10 years on any visa, can qualify for “indefinite leave to remain.” This status allows them to live, work, study, claim benefits, and eventually apply for citizenship. But under the new proposals, applicants would need to meet tougher conditions. They must hold a job, pay social security contributions, claim no benefits, have a clean criminal record, and take part in community service. Proficiency in English will also be required. Mahmood is set to outline the plans at the ruling Labour Party’s annual conference, with a public consultation expected later this year. She […]

Iran Executes Alleged Top Israeli Spy After June War

Iran announced Monday it has executed a man accused of being one of Israel’s top spies, deepening tensions months after the two countries’ brief but devastating war. The judiciary’s Mizan Online reported that Bahman Choubi Asl was hanged after being convicted of working “closely” with Mossad, Israel’s foreign intelligence service. Officials said he had “privileged access to vital and sovereign databases” inside the Islamic republic but did not specify when he was arrested. The execution comes in the wake of the 12-day conflict in June, when unprecedented Israeli airstrikes hit Iranian military, government, and nuclear sites, killing senior officers, nuclear scientists, and civilians. Tehran retaliated with waves of missile and drone strikes on Israel before both sides halted hostilities. Since then, Iranian authorities have vowed swift justice for alleged collaborators. Dozens have been detained, and several executions announced. On August […]

US President Donald Trump will meet Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House on Monday for talks focused on finalizing a proposed peace plan for Gaza. Trump has claimed that a deal to end the nearly two-year conflict—free hostages, and disarm Hamas—is close to completion following his discussions with Arab leaders last week. On Sunday, he posted on Despite Trump’s optimism, Netanyahu has shown little sign of compromise. In a recent UN address, he pledged to “finish the job” against Hamas and rejected the establishment of a Palestinian state, even as Western nations push for one. He has also pressed ahead with Israel’s military campaign in Gaza City, displacing hundreds of thousands. This will be Netanyahu’s fourth White House visit since Trump returned to office in January. While Trump has long been a close ally, he has recently […]

Nigeria Gains Global Recognition for Tax-ID

Nigeria has achieved a significant milestone in its digital trade transformation with the global registration of its Tax Identification Number (Tax-ID) and the approval of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) as the country’s official Peppol Authority. The achievement, supported by the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON), registers Nigeria’s Tax-ID under the ISO/IEC 6523 International Coding System, granting Nigerian individuals and businesses recognition in cross-border transactions. Peppol—a globally accepted framework for the secure and standardised exchange of electronic documents—is widely used in Europe, Asia, and Australia. With FIRS as Nigeria’s Peppol Authority, local businesses can now connect seamlessly to this international network, ensuring faster payments, reduced administrative costs, and improved competitiveness. According to FIRS, the move will simplify compliance for taxpayers while boosting investor confidence. “This milestone simplifies compliance for taxpayers, enables smoother cross-border transactions, and strengthens confidence in Nigeria […]
