President Bola Tinubu has asked the Senate to approve a fresh 516,333,070 dollar loan from Deutsche Bank to help finance the proposed 1,000 kilometre Sokoto–Badagry super highway. Tinubu’s request was contained in a letter to Senate President Godswill Akpabio, which was read during plenary on Thursday in Abuja. She said every project her team puts out is driven by sacrifice, passion, consistency and a strong belief in the stories they tell. We don’t have it easy, but we make it count. Thank you,” she wrote. […]

‘Jamaica started Afrobeats’, says Rapper Fat Joe

American rapper Fat Joe has stirred controversy by claiming that Afrobeats originated from Jamaica. The veteran hip hop star made the remark on a recent episode of his “Joe and Jada” podcast while hosting Jamaican dancehall legend Buju Banton. “Jamaica started Afrobeats. Even though everything comes from Africa,” Fat Joe declared during the conversation. Buju Banton did not directly challenge the statement. Instead, he steered the discussion towards the roots of reggaeton, crediting Panamanian rapper El General as a pioneer whose work helped shape the genre and influence others. However, Afrobeats is widely recognised as a sound that emerged from West Africa, particularly Nigeria and Ghana. The genre draws heavily from Afrobeat, the revolutionary music style created in the 1970s by Nigerian icon Fela Anikulapo Kuti, while blending highlife, hip hop, R&B and other global influences. Fat Joe’s comment has […]

EPL: Chelsea’s slump deepens with 3–0 loss to Brighton

Chelsea’s miserable season hit a new low on Tuesday as they slumped to a 3–0 defeat away to Brighton, further damaging their hopes of qualifying for next season’s UEFA Champions League. Goals from Ferdi Kadioglu, Jack Hinshelwood and Danny Welbeck condemned Liam Rosenior’s side to a fifth straight Premier League loss without scoring, the first time Chelsea have suffered such a run since 1912. The result means the Blues have now lost seven of their last eight games in all competitions and won just one of their past nine league matches. Chelsea sit seventh on the table, seven points adrift of fifth placed Liverpool, with only the top five guaranteed Champions League football under the league’s current allocation. Unless they can quickly arrest their slide, Rosenior’s men risk missing out on European competition altogether. The pressure on the manager is […]

Falcons remain Africa’s best as Nigeria lasses rise to 36th in FIFA rankings

Nigeria’s Super Falcons have climbed to 36th place in the latest FIFA Women’s World Rankings, tightening their grip as Africa’s top ranked women’s national team. The Justine Madugu led side moved up one spot from 37th after a 3 1 victory over Cameroon in a friendly match last month. Despite limited fixtures, the result was enough to boost their global standing. The ten time African champions continue to lead the continent comfortably. South Africa’s Banyana Banyana are second in Africa and 58th in the world, followed by Ghana’s Black Queens in 59th, Morocco’s Atlas Lionesses in 62nd and Zambia in 64th to complete Africa’s top five. Nigeria’s rise comes in spite of recent inactivity caused by the late cancellation of planned friendlies against Cape Verde. Before that setback, the Falcons had split results in a two match friendly series against […]

Turkish Cup: Osimhen cleared for Gala comeback as Madrid join race for ace striker

Victor Osimhen is set to make his comeback tonight as Galatasaray host Gençlerbirliği in the Turkish Cup quarter final at Rams Park, in a return that coincides with reports that Real Madrid have joined Barcelona and Atletico Madrid in the battle for the Super Eagles striker. Osimhen only returned to full training last week after recovering from an arm injury sustained in the Champions League round of 16 clash against Liverpool, which sidelined him for four consecutive league matches. According to Turkish outlet Sabah, he is expected to feature for about 15 to 20 minutes against Gençlerbirliği as coach Okan Buruk carefully manages his workload ahead of Sunday’s high stakes Intercontinental Derby against Fenerbahçe. Galatasaray sit four points clear at the top of the Turkish Süper Lig after a 2 1 away win over Gençlerbirliği at the weekend, a game […]

UK PM Starmer vows not to resign over US envoy appointment scandal

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has insisted he will not resign over the controversy surrounding his appointment of Peter Mandelson as Britain’s ambassador to the United States. Speaking in parliament on Wednesday, Starmer said allegations that he misled MPs about the appointment had been “put to bed” after evidence given by the Foreign Office’s former top civil servant, Olly Robbins. Robbins was fired last week over the row. Starmer has faced intense pressure after admitting it was an error of judgment to push ahead with Mandelson’s posting despite red flags raised during security vetting. He had previously told lawmakers that “all due process” was followed. The prime minister now argues he would not have allowed the appointment to proceed had he been told that independent vetting officials recommended denying Mandelson security clearance. He told MPs that Robbins answered “no” when […]

Ukraine restarts Russian oil pipeline to Europe

Ukraine has resumed pumping Russian oil to Hungary and Slovakia through the Druzhba pipeline after completing repairs on a section damaged in a Russian attack in January. The Soviet era pipeline has been at the centre of a standoff between Ukraine and the European Union on one side and Hungary and Slovakia on the other, as both EU members continue to import Russian crude via the route despite the ongoing war. Kyiv hopes that restoring flows will clear the final obstacle to unlocking tens of billions of euros in EU financial support that had been held up by Hungary’s outgoing nationalist leader Viktor Orban. An energy industry source in Ukraine told AFP that “oil transit was launched and pumping began” on Wednesday. Hungarian energy company MOL said it expects the first shipments to arrive in Hungary and Slovakia by Thursday […]
