UNYF Urges INEC Chair to Remove Barriers to PVC Collection

The Unified Nigeria Youth Forum (UNYF) has urged the newly appointed Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Joash Ojo Amupitan, to prioritise accessibility, transparency, and accountability in managing Nigeria’s electoral process. In a statement issued on Saturday in Abuja, the Forum’s National President, Comrade Toriah Olajide Filani, said the credibility of future elections depends largely on how inclusive and accessible voter registration and Permanent Voter Card (PVC) collection become under the new leadership. Filani expressed concern that millions of eligible Nigerians remain unable to obtain their PVCs due to administrative bottlenecks and limited access to registration centres, especially in rural areas. “Despite the introduction of digital systems, many citizens lack internet access or the infrastructure to benefit,” he said. “In Lagos, for example, people queue as early as 2:00 a.m. just to register, yet many still leave […]

Report Says 1944 French Massacre of African Soldiers Was Premeditated

A new official report has revealed that the 1944 massacre of African soldiers by French colonial forces in Senegal was a premeditated and carefully covered-up operation, with the true death toll likely far higher than previously admitted. French authorities at the time claimed that at least 35 World War II veterans were killed at the Thiaroye camp near Dakar after they protested unpaid wages. However, a committee of researchers has found that between 300 and 400 soldiers were likely killed in what it called a “meticulously planned” attack. The 301-page report, submitted to Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye on Thursday, urged France to “officially request forgiveness” from the families and communities of the victims. Around 1,300 African troops from several West African countries had been sent to the Thiaroye camp in November 1944 after being released from German captivity, where […]

Kaduna Launches Drive to Immunize 4.2 Million Children

The Kaduna State Primary Health Care Board has begun an integrated measles and rubella vaccination campaign aimed at protecting over 4.2 million children across the state. The exercise, which started on Saturday, covers all 23 local government areas and targets children aged between nine months and 14 years. It is supported by UNICEF, the World Health Organisation (WHO), and other development partners. Speaking at the launch, Dr. Hamza Ibrahim, Director of Disease Control and Immunisation, said the campaign will help reduce the number of “zero-dose” children — those who have never received any vaccination. Kaduna State, he noted, accounts for around 10 percent of the 100 local government areas in Nigeria facing this challenge, with over 4,000 unvaccinated children identified. “Our progress has been made possible through the dedication of community women and the support of our partners,” Ibrahim said. Alonso Supports Players’ Protest Over La Liga Miami Match

Real Madrid coach Xabi Alonso has expressed support for La Liga players protesting the league’s decision to stage a match in the United States. La Liga recently announced that Barcelona’s away game against Villarreal will be played in Miami on December 20, marking the first time a European league fixture will take place abroad. In response, the Spanish Footballers’ Association (AFE) announced a “symbolic protest” at the start of every La Liga game this week. On Friday, players from Oviedo and Espanyol remained still for the first 15 seconds of their match, though the moment was not shown in the broadcast. “We are against the match; we believe it distorts the competition,” Alonso said during a press conference on Saturday. “There hasn’t been unanimity or proper consultation for it to be played on neutral ground. The protests are positive, and […]
