Deportation fears push undocumented US parents to assign guardians for their kids

A growing number of undocumented migrants in the United States are formally granting legal guardianship of their children to trusted allies, as fears of detention and deportation intensify. The arrangements are meant to ensure that children are not left abandoned or forced into foster care if their parents are suddenly removed from the country. Under these agreements, parents sign documents giving another adult power of attorney to act on their behalf in schools, hospitals and courts, while still retaining parental custody rights. Lawyers and advocacy groups say interest in guardianship and emergency planning has grown sharply as immigration enforcement has tightened and legal migration options have narrowed. One 32 year old Guatemalan mother in Miami said she decided to appoint a legal guardian because she fears never returning home from work one day if she is detained by immigration officers. Trump halts US green card lottery over security fears

The Trump administration has suspended the United States Diversity Immigrant Visa Programme, widely known as the green card lottery, citing security concerns after recent deadly shootings. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem announced that, on President Donald Trump’s directive, the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services has been ordered to pause the programme. The Diversity Visa scheme offers up to about 50,000 permanent resident visas each year to people from countries with historically low levels of immigration to the US, many of them in Africa. Beneficiaries are selected through an electronic lottery and can later apply for full green cards and, eventually, citizenship. Officials linked the suspension to an ongoing investigation into shootings at Brown University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where the suspected gunman is reported to have entered the US through the lottery programme and later obtained permanent […]

Questions trail NAF aircraft’s onward flight to Portugal

Fresh questions have emerged over the onward journey of the Nigerian Air Force C 130 aircraft that made an emergency landing in Burkina Faso while heading to Portugal for maintenance. Although officials earlier said the plane and its 11 man crew had been cleared to continue their mission, there is still no clear public confirmation on when it actually departed Bobo Dioulasso for Europe. The aircraft was on a ferry mission to Portugal on 8 December when the crew detected a technical fault after takeoff from Lagos and carried out a precautionary landing in Bobo Dioulasso, in line with international aviation safety procedures. Burkina Faso authorities subsequently held the plane and personnel, claiming an airspace violation, which triggered a diplomatic row and heightened regional tensions. Following high level talks in Ouagadougou led by Nigeria’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Yusuf Tuggar, the […]

Officials have described the attack as an anti semitic terrorist incident and are examining the suspects’ activities in the weeks and months leading up to the killings. Albanese told reporters that the discovery of ISIS flags formed part of the emerging evidence about the motive. He condemned what he called a “radical perversion of Islam,” saying extremist ideology […]
