Dangote threatens N100bn suit over ‘unclean business’ claim

President of Dangote Group, Aliko Dangote, has given Kaduna based businessman Kailani Mohammed a seven day ultimatum to retract alleged defamatory statements against him or face a N100 billion lawsuit. In a letter sent through his lawyer, Ogwu James Onoja (SAN), Dangote demanded a public explanation, retraction and unreserved apology over remarks made during a Trust TV interview. Mohammed had questioned the source of Dangote’s wealth and claimed he engaged in “unclean business” in Port Harcourt in the 1980s. The comments were made while reacting to Dangote’s petition against former NMDPRA chief executive Farouk Ahmed, which alleged misuse of public funds and economic sabotage. Dangote’s legal team said the statements were false, malicious and calculated to damage his reputation and business standing at home and abroad. The letter stated that the remarks portrayed him as a corrupt businessman who built […]

Nigeria’s data protection model now draws Africa’s interest

The Nigeria Data Protection Commission says reforms launched since 2023 have turned the country into a reference point for data protection and privacy in Africa. Officials credit President Bola Tinubu’s prompt assent to the 2023 Data Protection Act and early policy direction from NDPC chief executive Vincent Olatunji for strengthening the ecosystem. The commission said the law created clear regulatory and supervisory powers, opened new opportunities in the data economy and placed stronger obligations on organisations handling personal data. Banks, schools, hospitals, insurers, telecoms firms and online platforms have been put under stricter oversight, with some sanctioned for data breaches. According to the NDPC, Nigeria’s consistent enforcement and regulatory clarity have attracted attention from across the continent. In the last two years, data regulators from at least eight African countries have visited to study the Nigerian framework with a view […]

Kannywood stars told to protect image in digital age

A new conversation around Kannywood is highlighting why reputation and digital visibility have become crucial for the northern Nigerian film industry. Industry observers say Kannywood can no longer afford scandals, poor quality output or weak online presence if it wants to compete with Nollywood and attract global audiences. Commentators note that streaming platforms, social media and short video apps now shape how actors and filmmakers are perceived. This means performers’ off screen behaviour, public statements and digital footprints can either build trust with viewers and brands or damage the entire industry’s image. Analysts also argue that better organisation, professional conduct and strategic branding are now as important as storytelling and acting talent. They say Kannywood must show that it can reflect northern values responsibly while still producing commercially viable, modern entertainment. Digitalisation is seen as both a risk and an […]

Ini Edo begs NFVCB not to pull film from cinemas

Actress and filmmaker Ini Edo has appealed to the National Film and Video Censors Board and the public not to pull her new movie, A Very Dirty Christmas, from cinemas, insisting the film does not mock Christianity. In an emotional video shared on Instagram, she urged critics to watch the film first and promised to withdraw it if it is found to insult God or Christians in any way. Edo explained that the controversy is about the title, not the content, stressing that the story focuses on family conflict and secrets, not anything immoral or anti Christian. She said investors had put money into the production, with over 70 cinemas already showing the movie and major spending on print, media and digital promotion. She apologised to Christians who felt offended by the title, saying there was no intention to disrespect […]

IK Ogbonna backs Ini Edo in CAN movie row

Actor IK Ogbonna has thrown his weight behind colleague Ini Edo amid criticism from the Christian Association of Nigeria over the title of her new movie, A Very Dirty Christmas. He said he is deeply disappointed with CAN’s reaction, arguing that the group stayed silent for months while the film was being promoted. In a post on Instagram, Ogbonna noted that the movie’s title was officially approved by the National Film and Video Censors Board before it was released in cinemas nationwide. He questioned why CAN waited until the film was already showing and performing well before raising objections. Ogbonna stressed that the matter is not about picking a fight with the church but about fairness, consistency and integrity. He asked how it reflects Christian values to ignore the project during its development and promotion, only to speak up after […]

Liverpool fear record signing Isak has broken leg

Liverpool fear that striker Alexander Isak has suffered a broken leg in the Premier League win over Tottenham Hotspur, according to multiple reports. The Swedish forward was injured while scoring the opening goal in Saturday’s 2–1 victory in London after a strong challenge from Spurs defender Micky van de Ven. Isak, who came on as a second half substitute, finished calmly from close range but was left in clear pain and could not join his teammates in celebrating. Iran insists missile programme is defensive

Iran has declared that its missile programme is strictly defensive and will not be discussed in any negotiations with foreign governments. Foreign ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei said the country’s missiles were built to protect Iran’s territory and sovereignty, not to threaten others. Baghaei dismissed calls from Western countries to place limits on Iran’s missile activities, insisting that the issue lies entirely within Iran’s national security domain. He argued that critics use the missile programme as a political tool to pressure Tehran while ignoring the large volumes of weapons supplied to Israel and other regional allies. The spokesman said Iran’s missile capabilities are designed to deter attacks and form a key part of the country’s overall defence strategy. He stressed that these defensive assets are “by no means subject to negotiation” and that Iran will decide for itself how to maintain […]

Man City stars face Christmas weigh in warning

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has warned his players not to overindulge during their brief Christmas break, saying anyone who returns overweight will be left out of the squad to face Nottingham Forest. He revealed that the entire squad was weighed before the holiday and will be checked again when they report back to training on December 25. Guardiola said the players had asked for a day off after the 3–0 win over West Ham, but he refused, insisting they had not played well enough to earn it. Instead, the team held a recovery session on Sunday, trained those who did not feature, and were then given three days off before regrouping ahead of the trip to Nottingham. The City boss explained that the weigh in is meant to ensure the players maintain top fitness levels despite the festive period.
