Dangote launches hotline to report MRS stations overcharging for petrol

Dangote Petroleum Refinery has introduced a nationwide hotline for Nigerians to report any MRS Oil Nigeria Plc filling station selling petrol above the approved pump price of N739 per litre. The refinery said the move is part of efforts to protect consumers, promote transparency and ensure its latest price cut reaches end users. In a statement signed by company official Esan Sunday, Dangote announced that the toll free number 0800 123 5264 is now active across the country. Consumers can call the line to lodge complaints about any MRS outlet found charging more than N739 for Premium Motor Spirit. The hotline was launched after reports that some MRS stations continued to sell petrol above the approved price despite Dangote’s reduction of the gantry rate to N699 per litre and the recommended pump price to N739. Canada suspends Start Up Visa, plans new 2026 pathway

Canada has stopped taking new applications for its federal Start Up Visa program and says it will launch a new, more targeted entrepreneur pathway in 2026. Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada confirmed that intake under the scheme will close at 11.59 p.m. on December 31, 2025, after years of mounting backlogs and long processing times. IRCC already halted applications for the optional Start Up Visa work permit on December 19, ending the route that allowed many founders to move to Canada while they waited for permanent residence decisions. Only entrepreneurs already in Canada on a valid SUV related permit can still apply for extensions. Officials say the pause will help clear existing cases and prepare for a new pilot program for immigrant entrepreneurs that is expected to start in 2026. The government says the replacement will focus on quality over […]

Trump says it would be ‘smart’ for Venezuela’s Maduro to step down

United States President Donald Trump has said it would be “smart” for Venezuela’s President Nicolas Maduro to step down amid rising tensions between Washington and Caracas. Speaking to reporters at his Mar a Lago resort in Florida, Trump said the decision ultimately rests with Maduro but warned that defiance would carry serious consequences. Asked whether US actions were aimed at forcing Maduro from power, Trump replied that it would probably be wise for the Venezuelan leader to leave office. He added that if Maduro “plays tough, it’ll be the last time he’s ever able to play tough,” in one of his starkest warnings yet. The comments come as US naval forces step up operations around Venezuela, including a tightened maritime blockade targeting the country’s oil shipments. Washington has also carried out more than two dozen strikes on vessels it accuses […]

Gazans fear new displacement after Israeli strikes

Residents of southern Gaza say they fear being pushed from their homes again after new Israeli strikes hit neighbourhoods near a demarcation known as the Yellow Line. The line, east of Khan Yunis, was created under a ceasefire deal between Israel and Hamas and marks an area where Israeli troops still control movement through checkpoints. Tens of thousands of Gazans still live in tents or damaged houses in communities close to the Yellow Line more than two years into the war. Many now worry that continued bombardment is an attempt to force them to move westward into already overcrowded camps where food, water and basic supplies are scarce. “We do not sleep at night because of fear. The bombardments in the east are relentless,” said Umm Ahmed, a 40 year old mother from Bani Suheila whose home was destroyed earlier […]

FG unveils new rules for online pharmacy services

The Federal Government has moved to tighten control of online medicine sales with the launch of a National Electronic Pharmacy Policy and Strategic Implementation Plan. Officials say the policy is designed to regulate electronic pharmacy services, curb unsafe drug sales on digital platforms and expand access to quality assured medicines. Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Professor Ali Pate, said the rise of digital platforms has transformed many sectors but left the pharmaceutical space fragmented, with limited oversight of online drug vendors. He explained that the new framework aims to modernise healthcare delivery so that Nigerians can get safe, affordable medicines regardless of where they live. According to Pate, the e pharmacy policy sets out a clear and enforceable framework for all electronic pharmacy activities in Nigeria. It establishes licensing and accreditation standards for digital pharmacy platforms, enables real […]

Radda tells Nigerians not to blame governors alone for hardship

Katsina State Governor Dikko Umaru Radda has urged Nigerians to stop blaming state governors alone for the country’s worsening economic hardship. He argued that the Federal Government takes the largest share of national revenue and therefore bears major responsibility for how resources are used. Radda noted that under the current revenue sharing formula, the Federal Government receives about 52 percent of funds from the Federation Account, while states and local governments share the rest. He said this leaves subnational governments struggling to meet rising demands for salaries, infrastructure and social services amid inflation and currency depreciation. The governor pointed out that recent court rulings directing that local government funds be paid directly to councils will further limit the ability of states to intervene in grassroots projects. He warned that citizens should not expect miracles from governors when most of the […]

FG insists it did not alter new tax laws

The Federal Government has denied allegations that it secretly altered provisions of the newly signed tax reform laws before they were published in the official gazette. The Presidency said the laws now in force reflect what President Bola Tinubu signed and that any claims of changes made outside due process are unfounded. Presidential officials stressed that neither the President nor any authorised aide instructed anyone to tamper with the content of the tax bills passed by the National Assembly. They maintained that the executive respected the outcome of legislative debates and followed the standard procedure from passage to presidential assent and gazetting. Chairman of the Presidential Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms Committee, Taiwo Oyedele, urged critics to allow the House of Representatives ad hoc committee to complete its investigation into the alleged discrepancies. He said any genuine errors or inconsistencies […]
