Infantino backs high 2026 World Cup ticket prices

FIFA president Gianni Infantino has defended the much-criticised ticket prices for the 2026 World Cup, calling demand for the tournament “absolutely crazy”. He said organisers have received about 150 million ticket requests in just two weeks, far above historic levels for the competition. Speaking at the World Sports Summit in Dubai, Infantino explained that all revenue from the World Cup in the United States, Mexico and Canada will be reinvested into football worldwide. He argued that FIFA is the only global body that funds football development in many countries and that these funds keep the game alive in around 150 nations. His comments follow anger from fan groups, who have described the 2026 prices as extortionate compared to previous tournaments. In response to the backlash, FIFA announced that a limited number of tickets would be available at 60 dollars to […]

Super Eagles stars one booking away from AFCON ban

Four key Super Eagles players risk suspension ahead Nigeria’s final AFCON 2025 Group C match against Uganda. Victor Osimhen, Ademola Lookman, Semi Ajayi and goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali are all one yellow card away from missing the Round of 16. If Osimhen is booked in the Uganda game, coach Eric Chelle may be forced to start Paul Onuachu as striker in the first knockout match. Lookman, who has scored in both of Nigeria’s games so far, would also be ruled out of the next round if he receives another caution. Ajayi’s card situation could push Chelle to adjust his back line, possibly turning to Zaidu Sanusi to keep the defence stable. Nwabali, cautioned for time wasting against Tunisia, would be replaced by Francis Uzoho if he picks up a second yellow card. Nigeria have already beaten Tanzania 2-1 and Tunisia 3-2, […]

Nigerians recall harsh 2025 but hope for relief in 2026

Many Nigerians say 2025 was one of the hardest years in recent times, marked by rising prices, insecurity and deep uncertainty. In spite of this, they are looking to 2026 with cautious hope that living conditions will improve. In Owerri, some residents described 2025 as a year of crippling hardship, especially for people in small businesses and daily trading. A trader, Chinonso Nze, said the economic climate was poor and that surviving the year felt like a miracle for many families. He blamed the hardship on high inflation and worsening insecurity that made travel dangerous in many parts of the country. According to him, kidnappings and attacks on highways left commuters feeling unsafe and afraid to move freely. Nze also expressed concern about a new tax regime expected to take effect in 2026, warning that it could further strain already […]

Court remands ex-AGF Malami, son, co-defendant in Kuje prison over multibillion-naira fraud

A Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered the remand of former Attorney-General of the Federation Abubakar Malami (SAN), his son Abdulaziz Malami and a co-defendant, Asabe Bashir, in custody over an alleged multibillion-naira money laundering case. Justice Emeka Nwite directed that Malami and his son be held at Kuje Correctional Centre while Bashir is to be kept at Suleja Correctional Centre, pending the hearing of their bail applications. The defendants were earlier arraigned by the EFCC on a 16-count charge bordering on alleged money laundering, unlawful acquisition of assets and conspiracy, to which they all pleaded not guilty. The judge declined an oral request for bail, ruling that it would be unfair to grant bail before the prosecution files a formal response to the written bail application already before the court. Justice Nwite said granting bail at this stage […]

Ex-AGF Malami, son arraigned on N8.7bn money laundering charges, plead not guilty

Former Attorney-General of the Federation Abubakar Malami (SAN) and his son have been arraigned by the EFCC on 16 counts of alleged money laundering running into about N8.7bn, with both pleading not guilty before the Federal High Court in Abuja. The charges allege they used companies like Metropolitan Auto Tech Ltd, Rayhaan Hotels Ltd and Meethaq Hotels Ltd to conceal the illicit origin of funds and acquire properties across Abuja, Kano and Kebbi between 2015 and 2025. Prosecutors say over N1.01bn was allegedly hidden in a Sterling Bank account between July 2022 and June 2025, with another N600m used as collateral for a N500m bank loan to Rayhaan Hotels in 2021. Trump-Zelenskyy talks advance Ukraine peace deal 90% despite Donbas issues

President Donald Trump and Ukraine's Volodymyr Zelenskyy reported significant progress toward a 20-point peace framework ending Russia's war after two hours of talks at Mar-a-Lago, Florida. Trump stated Ukraine is "a lot closer" to a deal with resolution expected in weeks, praising Zelenskyy as "brave" while claiming Russia wants Ukraine to succeed. Zelenskyy confirmed the plan is "90% agreed," with US-Ukraine security guarantees at 100% (Trump said 95%), marking a key milestone for lasting peace. Thorny issues remain, primarily Russia's demand for control of Ukraine's eastern Donbas region, which Zelenskyy said respects Ukrainian law, people, and territory, creating a tough standoff. Trump noted progress over the past month on complicated matters, including the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant under Russian control since 2022, where Putin is cooperative on reopening without missile strikes. Trump spoke with Putin earlier, describing him as "very serious" […]

China launches major war games around Taiwan in Justice Mission 2025

China initiated its most extensive war games around Taiwan on Monday, dubbed "Justice Mission 2025," demonstrating Beijing's capability to isolate the island from external support during conflict. The exercises test Taipei's defenses and U.S.-supplied weapons amid ongoing tensions rooted in China's "one China" policy since 1949, when the Republic of China government fled to Taiwan after the civil war. Taiwan rejects Beijing's sovereignty claims, asserting its independence as the Republic of China with self-determination by its people. Historical flashpoints include near-wars post-1949, 1958 artillery bombardments of Kinmen and Matsu islands, and 1996 missile tests before Taiwan's first direct presidential election won by Lee Teng-hui. Recent escalations feature 2022 drills after Nancy Pelosi's Taipei visit with ballistic missiles overflying the island; April 2023 exercises post-Tsai Ing-wen's U.S. meeting; August 2023 response to Lai Ching-te's U.S. trip; May 2024 "Joint Sword-2024A" after […]
