Maduro to face US judge after capture

Deposed Venezuelan president Nicolas Maduro is due to make his first appearance in a United States federal court in Manhattan on Monday, two days after he was seized in a U.S. military operation in Caracas and flown to New York. Court officials say the hearing, scheduled for around noon, will be an initial appearance and arraignment on long standing U.S. federal charges. Maduro faces a four count indictment accusing him of leading a 25 year narco terrorism and cocaine trafficking conspiracy that allegedly used Venezuela’s state institutions and security forces to move tons of cocaine into the United States. The charges include conspiracy to commit narco terrorism, conspiracy to import cocaine, and related weapons offences involving machine guns and explosives. He is being held at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn alongside other high profile inmates while awaiting trial. U.S. […]

North Korea tests hypersonic missiles, warns nuclear forces are war ready

North Korea says it has successfully test fired new hypersonic missiles under the supervision of leader Kim Jong Un to prepare its nuclear forces for a possible war. State media said the launches were part of drills to place the country’s nuclear arsenal on a more practical, combat ready footing amid what Pyongyang called a worsening geopolitical crisis. According to reports, the missiles flew around 1,000 kilometres over waters east of North Korea, in what Seoul and Tokyo described as the country’s first ballistic missile test of the year. Hypersonic missiles travel at more than five times the speed of sound and can manoeuvre in flight, making them harder for existing air and missile defences to track or intercept. Kim said recent international events, including the U.S. military operation that removed Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, proved the need for a […]

Greenland PM tells Trump ‘enough is enough’

Greenland’s Prime Minister Jens Frederik Nielsen has firmly rejected renewed threats from U.S. President Donald Trump about annexing the autonomous Arctic territory. In a strongly worded message on Facebook, he said “that’s enough now” and called for an end to pressure, insinuations and what he described as fantasies about taking over Greenland. Nielsen stressed that Greenland is open to dialogue with the United States but only on the basis of mutual respect and international law. He insisted that Greenland’s future must be decided by its own people, not by external powers, and warned that talk of annexation has no place between friends and partners. His comments came after Trump again floated the idea of bringing Greenland under U.S. control, shortly after U.S. forces removed Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro in a military operation that alarmed Danish officials. The renewed annexation talk […]

US never targeted me in Sokoto airstrikes, says Gumi

Kaduna based Islamic cleric Sheikh Ahmad Gumi has dismissed reports that he was targeted by the United States during recent joint Nigeria US airstrikes on terrorist camps in Sokoto State. He described the claims as fake news, explaining that people had misinterpreted an old video in which he spoke about threats to his life more than a decade ago. Gumi said the viral clip being shared online referred to an incident in August 2012, when he was allegedly marked for assassination by Boko Haram near his residence. According to him, two suspected attackers died after the explosive device they were carrying reportedly detonated before they could reach him, and the episode had nothing to do with the latest air operations in Sokoto. In a statement posted on his official social media page, the cleric insisted he never suggested that US […]

Man United sack Ruben Amorim after 14 months

Manchester United have sacked manager Ruben Amorim just 14 months after his arrival at Old Trafford, the club confirmed on Monday. His dismissal follows a period of poor form and growing tensions with the club hierarchy over tactics, transfers and his level of authority. Amorim was informed of the decision in a meeting with director of football Jason Wilcox and chief executive Omar Berrada, during which he was officially relieved of his duties. United said in a statement that the leadership had “reluctantly” decided it was the right time to make a change in order to give the team the best chance of a strong finish to the Premier League season. Reports in recent days highlighted senior figures’ dissatisfaction with Amorim’s insistence on his preferred 3 4 3 system and concerns that the team was not progressing despite heavy investment […]

Resident doctors to resume indefinite strike January 12

The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors has announced plans to resume its suspended nationwide indefinite strike from Monday, January 12, 2026, if the Federal Government fails to fully meet its key demands. The NEC stressed that the strike will only be suspended if government fully implements nine minimum demands outlined in its latest resolution. The demands include the reinstatement of five resident doctors disengaged from the Federal Teaching Hospital, Lokoja, payment of outstanding promotion and salary arrears, and full implementation of the professional allowance table […]

Maduro seized, but power network still holds Venezuela

Venezuela faces deep uncertainty over who is really in charge after U.S. forces seized President Nicolas Maduro and flew him out of the country, even though Washington says Vice President Delcy Rodríguez has been named acting leader. Venezuela’s top court has said the constitution makes Rodríguez interim president in Maduro’s absence, but she quickly appeared on state TV with powerful regime figures to insist Maduro remains the only president, signalling that his inner circle is still united. For more than a decade, real power in Venezuela has rested with a small group of senior civilian and military officials who control security forces, state institutions and major economic sectors. Analysts say this patronage network, built on loyalty, corruption and surveillance, is harder to dismantle than simply removing Maduro, because dozens of key players would need to be sidelined before genuine change […]

Nigeria coach accepts underdog respect from Mozambique

Mozambique head coach Chiquinho Conde has backed his players to compete strongly against Nigeria in the Africa Cup of Nations round of 16, even as he accepts that the Super Eagles are favourites. He described Nigeria as the stronger side but stressed that Mozambique would approach the knockout tie with humility, calmness and responsibility. Conde said Mozambique had already shown they are a strong and competent team during the group stage, despite narrow setbacks against heavyweights like Côte d’Ivoire and Cameroon. He added that the team must now be fully focused because the knockout phase is a do or die situation, using the phrase “kill kill” to describe the intensity of the contest. Mozambique advanced to the last 16 of the 2025 Afcon after a demanding group campaign against top level opposition. Their progress included a historic 3 2 victory […]

Joshua back in UK as friends’ funeral holds

Anthony Joshua has returned to the United Kingdom after the fatal car crash in Nigeria that killed two of his close friends and left him hospitalised. The former world heavyweight champion arrived at London Stansted Airport on a private jet on Friday night and was taken home to continue his recovery. Joshua’s friends Latif Ayodele and Sina Ghami died when chauffeur Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode reportedly drove into a stationary truck on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway. Joshua was taken to Duchess International Hospital in Lagos, where he stayed through the New Year and was described by authorities and family sources as being in a stable condition. His mother, Yeta Odusanya, remained with him in hospital, but other relatives were not allowed to visit while he was being treated at the private facility in Lagos.
