Troops kill over 23 bandits in Kano–Katsina joint operation

Troops under Operation Fansan Yamma have neutralised more than 23 bandits in a coordinated onslaught spanning Kano and Katsina states at the start of the new year.​The operation followed attempted attacks on communities in Shanono and Tsanyawa Local Government Areas of Kano, where Joint Task Force troops repelled the assailants and pursued them as they fled toward Katsina.​ According to a statement from 3 Brigade, Nigerian Army, the fleeing bandits regrouped around Karaduwa and Dan Marke areas of Matazu LGA in Katsina, where they were tracked by air assets and later hit with precision airstrikes that inflicted heavy casualties and destroyed weapons and equipment.​Security sources say earlier phases of the wider joint operation had already accounted for scores of bandits and the recovery of dozens of rustled cattle in border communities between the two states.​ The Army said security in […]

25 dead, 14 missing in Yobe boat mishap

No fewer than 25 persons have died, while 14 others are still missing, after a boat capsized along the Yobe River in Garbi town, Nguru Local Government Area of Yobe State.​Authorities say the wooden canoe was carrying more than 50 passengers when it overturned on Saturday night, leaving only a handful of survivors pulled from the water by local divers and emergency responders.​ According to preliminary reports, the passengers were returning from Adiyani town in neighbouring Jigawa State, where many had been engaged in fishing, farming and petty trading, when the incident occurred mid journey.​As of the latest updates, 25 bodies have been recovered and about 13 people rescued alive, while search and rescue operations continue for the 14 still unaccounted for.​ The Yobe State Emergency Management Agency confirmed the tragedy and said teams from Nguru and surrounding areas are […]

US lifts Caribbean airspace curbs after Venezuela strike
