Why impressive CVs don’t always secure the job – Mary Njoku

Actress and filmmaker Mary Njoku has questioned why many impressive CVs do not translate into successful hires, despite companies constantly complaining about the struggle to find good employees. In an Instagram post, she said she is “genuinely confused” because every day she sees people without jobs, solid CVs on paper and employers still unable to get the right talent. Njoku argued that CVs have quietly turned into “marketing documents” rather than honest reflections of what people can actually do. According to her, job titles are often inflated, responsibilities are written in an aspirational way and surface level polish has replaced real depth and competence. She noted that a CV can tick all the boxes until the candidate appears at the interview and “something doesn’t connect”. For her, this growing disconnect between what looks good on paper and what shows up […]

Rivers Chief Judge rejects impeachment request over court orders

The Chief Judge of Rivers State, Justice Chibuzor Simeon Amadi, has declined a request by the Rivers State House of Assembly to set up a seven member panel to probe Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Prof Ngozi Odu, over alleged gross misconduct. In a leaked response letter, he said his hands were tied by subsisting interim injunctions issued by a High Court on 16 January 2026 in two separate suits filed by the governor and his deputy. The court orders expressly barred the Chief Judge from receiving, processing, considering or acting on any impeachment related request or communication from the Assembly pending further hearing of the cases. Amadi noted that he was listed as the 32nd defendant in the suits and confirmed that the interim orders had been duly served on his office. He stressed the supremacy of constitutionalism […]

Catholic Bishops of the Owerri Ecclesiastical Province have raised concern over the soaring prices of goods and essential commodities, warning that life is becoming increasingly unaffordable for ordinary Nigerians. While acknowledging slight reductions in a few commodity prices, they urged government and citizens to act decisively to stop the economy from sliding into deeper crisis. They also lamented the plight of workers and retirees, citing delayed salaries, unpaid pensions and poor living conditions. Describing work as a sacred duty that expresses human dignity, they called on public and private employers to ensure just […]

Davido thanks father for defending him in paternity controversy

Afrobeats star Davido has thanked his father, billionaire businessman Adedeji Adeleke, for publicly defending him in the ongoing paternity dispute involving Ayo Labinjoh and her teenage daughter, Aanu. Aanu had recently written an open letter asking Davido to agree to a new DNA test to confirm her claim that he is her biological father. Davido responded on X, denying ever meeting Labinjoh and stating that five previous DNA tests had already shown he is not the girl’s father. Labinjoh has rejected those results, alleging that the tests were fake and insisting that Davido remains the father of her child. As the controversy grew, Adedeji Adeleke called a press conference on Wednesday to address the matter. At the briefing, he backed his son and explained that the paternity tests were done on both Davido and his cousin, singer B Red. US presses Nigeria to do more to protect Christians

The United States has told Nigeria it must do more to protect Christians as senior officials from both countries meet in Abuja for high level security talks. The comments follow the reported mass kidnapping of worshippers from several churches in Kaduna State, an incident that has triggered local and international concern. Allison Hooker, US under secretary of state for political affairs and head of the American delegation, said Nigeria’s government must guarantee that Christians can practise their faith freely and safely. She directly referenced the alleged abduction of more than 170 people from churches in Kajuru Local Government Area. Hooker’s remarks reflect the priority US President Donald Trump has placed on what he calls “genocide” and “persecution” of Christians in Nigeria. Washington’s framing has been rejected by the Nigerian government and many analysts, who note that both Muslims and Christians […]

Supreme Court ends Kudirat Abiola murder case against Al Mustapha

The Supreme Court has dismissed the case seeking to revive the murder trial of Major Hamza Al Mustapha over the killing of Kudirat Abiola, wife of the acclaimed winner of the 1993 presidential election. The apex court held that Lagos State had abandoned the matter after failing to take any steps since 2014. Kudirat Abiola was assassinated in Lagos on June 4, 1996, during nationwide protests against the annulment of her husband MKO Abiola’s election victory. Al Mustapha, then Chief Security Officer to the late Head of State, General Sani Abacha, was charged alongside Mohammed Abacha and Lateef Shofolahan on counts of conspiracy and murder. In January 2012, a Lagos High Court convicted the defendants and sentenced them to death by hanging. However, the Court of Appeal in July 2013 overturned the judgment, discharged and acquitted them, ruling that the […]

Deji Adeleke denies Davido fathered 12 year old Ibadan girl

Billionaire businessman Deji Adeleke has formally denied long running claims that his son, Afrobeats star Davido, is the father of a 12 year old girl named Anuoluwapo from Ibadan. He described the allegations as false and blamed years of misinformation and alleged impersonation by commentator Kemi Olunloyo. Adeleke said he has five children and 14 grandchildren and would gladly welcome another grandchild if paternity were ever confirmed. He explained that he decided to speak publicly because the same story resurfaces almost every year on social media. He traced the case back to 2014, when he received a DHL package from Ibadan containing photos of Davido and the child, a birth certificate naming “Adeleke David” as the father and a letter from the girl’s grandmother. The widow asked only for a DNA test to confirm paternity and responsibility, not marriage or […]
