Why I asked my mother before signing Greenwood – Longoria

Marseille president Pablo Longoria has revealed that he consulted his mother before approving the controversial signing of former Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood in 2024, calling it one of the toughest decisions of his career. He said he wanted an opinion completely detached from football, money and club interests before giving the green light. Longoria explained that the club viewed Greenwood’s arrival as a huge sporting opportunity but carried out extensive due diligence on the case first. Greenwood was suspended by Manchester United in January 2022 following his arrest on suspicion of attempted rape, assault and coercive behaviour, with all charges later dropped in February 2023 after key witnesses withdrew. Speaking to The Telegraph, Longoria said he called his mother, Begona Longoria, a former prison system worker in Spain who once received a state medal for her service. After he […]

Military should have apologised after denying coup plot – Falana

Human rights lawyer Femi Falana, SAN, has faulted the Nigerian military for failing to apologise to citizens after initially denying any coup plot, only to later confirm that some officers would face trial over an alleged scheme to overthrow the government. He said people in authority must learn to take Nigerians seriously and correct themselves publicly when previous statements turn out to be misleading. Falana recalled that in October 2025 the military dismissed claims linking the cancellation of the Independence Day parade to a coup plot as “false and malicious” and capable of creating unnecessary tension. He argued that once investigations showed the matter went beyond mere indiscipline, the military ought to have admitted this and apologised instead of quietly reversing its position. The lawyer also questioned the plan to try the detained officers by court martial, insisting that allegations […]

NITDA, NBC forge new alliance on digital transformation, media oversight

The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) and the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) have agreed to deepen collaboration on digital transformation and media regulation as technology and broadcasting increasingly converge in Nigeria. The partnership was sealed during a courtesy visit by NBC Director‑General Charles Ebuebu to NITDA Director‑General Kashifu Inuwa Abdullahi in Abuja. Abdullahi said NITDA is undergoing an internal transformation from a traditional civil service body into a high‑velocity, smart public sector institution capable of responding to fast‑changing digital realities. He explained that, because most staff came from the mainstream public service, the agency launched a cultural reorientation focused on people, mindset reset, capacity building and a work culture that supports innovation and accountability. He outlined NITDA’s digital transformation strategy built on three pillars: people, processes and technology, stressing that tools alone cannot deliver value without skilled personnel and […]

Tension as youths protest heavy security in Onitsha markets

Tension has gripped the commercial city of Onitsha as traders and youths protested the closure of Onitsha Market ordered by Anambra State governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo. Fierce‑looking security operatives in armoured personnel carriers were stationed at the market entrances, while many traders watched from a distance. Soludo had vowed to shut the market for one week over traders’ continued observance of the Monday sit‑at‑home, warning that if they still failed to open next Monday, the closure could be extended to one month and the market even demolished. He stated that anyone unwilling to trade on Mondays should “leave Anambra and go elsewhere,” insisting the state cannot afford further economic losses. On Tuesday, residents were surprised to see heavy patrols by security operatives around the market area as youths trooped out, chanting solidarity songs for jailed IPOB leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu. National grid fails again, second system disturbance in 5 days

Nigeria’s national electricity grid failed again on Tuesday morning around 11am, throwing many homes and businesses into darkness in what is the second nationwide outage in five days. Data from the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO), a unit of the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), showed total generation from just two GENCOs at about 219 megawatts at the time of the disturbance. Head of Communications at NISO, Mr Kazah Akau, downplayed the incident, saying it was “not actually a collapse but a little disturbance” and promised that an official statement would be issued. However, the sharp drop in available power once again highlighted the fragility of the grid and the impact of repeated disruptions on the already strained economy. Load profile data from the 11 distribution companies indicated a total allocation of roughly 220MW being shared nationwide. Benin and Ibadan […]

Bimbo Ademoye wins YouTube copyright battle over film soundtrack

Actress and filmmaker Bimbo Ademoye has celebrated a major win in a YouTube copyright dispute involving her film Where Love Lives. She said she felt deep gratitude and relief after the contested claim was finally resolved in her favour. In an emotional Instagram post, Ademoye thanked her mother, her friends, her creative team and her loyal online “cyber family” for rallying behind her. She praised fans for relentlessly reporting the infringing content and the individual behind it until the wrongful claim was taken down across platforms. The dispute began when someone using the fake alias Emmanuel Davies allegedly uploaded a song from Where Love Lives to digital platforms like Spotify and then filed a copyright claim against her YouTube upload. The track, however, is fully owned by Ademoye with the artist’s consent, and the false claim led to a strike, demonetisation and diversion […]

Teniola Aladese urges women to live independently before marriage

Actress Teniola Aladese has stressed the importance of women achieving independence before marriage, calling it a crucial foundation for a successful union. Speaking on the “That’s What She Said” podcast, she said women who live alone before tying the knot better understand their preferences, boundaries and responsibilities. Aladese noted that many women move straight from their parents’ homes to their husbands’ houses without any prior experience of independent living. She warned that this can lead to culture shock, emotional strain and, in some cases, regret when unexpected habits and mannerisms surface in marriage. According to her, living alone helps women know themselves, identify what they like and decide the “nonsense” they are willing or unwilling to tolerate in a relationship. She argued that such independence builds maturity, self‑awareness and resilience, which she believes are essential for healthy, sustainable marriages. Aladese added that […]

Why I wasn’t successful in America – Speed Darlington

Controversial singer Speed Darlington has explained that his 23 years in the United States brought him more legal troubles and emotional distress than success or money. He said his time there was dominated by arrests, criminal records and loneliness rather than the “American Dream” many expect. Darlington described America as isolating and racially biased, alleging that as a black man he constantly felt undervalued and pressured to overprove himself before getting any respect. He added that worrying about his accent and being mocked made it hard for him to approach women or build relationships, which badly affected his confidence and mental health. He contrasted this with his life in Nigeria, where he said he feels respected, successful and financially rewarded. According to him, he built his mansion with a rooftop swimming pool from money earned in Nigeria, including proceeds from […]

Prioritise key reforms, CISLAC tells National Assembly

The Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre (CISLAC) has urged the 10th National Assembly to prioritise governance, accountability and key legislative reforms as it resumes sitting for 2026. The group warned lawmakers against early electioneering ahead of the 2027 polls, saying political distractions could undermine their work. In a statement signed by its Executive Director, Auwal Ibrahim Musa (Rafsanjani), CISLAC described 2026 as a critical year for both President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration and the legislature, with citizens expecting concrete results from policies rolled out since 2023. Rafsanjani cautioned that legislative productivity often declines in pre‑election periods and noted that proposals to hold general elections as early as November 2026 could heighten public anxiety and weaken governance. CISLAC said Nigeria’s harsh economic realities, insecurity, rising debt and declining public trust demand a focused, responsive and accountable parliament rather than one seen […]
