Alcaraz edges Zverev in epic Australian Open semi as German questions timeout

World number one Carlos Alcaraz reached his first Australian Open final after outlasting Alexander Zverev in a five set marathon that both men called one of the best battles of their careers. The Spaniard won 6 4, 7 6, 6 7, 6 7, 7 5 in a gruelling contest lasting more than five hours on Rod Laver Arena. Alcaraz appeared to be cruising at two sets to love up before suffering what looked like cramp in his leg late in the third set. At 4 5 in the third, he suddenly pulled up, called the trainer and took a medical timeout for treatment on his thigh, leaving Zverev visibly frustrated. After the match, Zverev said he did not believe Alcaraz should have been allowed a medical timeout if the problem was only cramp, which is not normally treated as an […]

Group backs NAFDAC, urges strict enforcement of sachet alcohol ban

The Renevlyn Development Initiative has urged NAFDAC to stand firm on enforcing the ban on the production, distribution and sale of alcoholic drinks in sachets and containers of 200 millilitres and below. In a statement signed by its Executive Director, Philip Jakpor, the group said the call became necessary following rising opposition from sections of the alcohol and beverage industry after enforcement began on January 22. He noted that the current crackdown is the outcome of more than two years of engagements between NAFDAC and industry stakeholders. Jakpor recalled that the Association of Food, Beverage and Tobacco Employers and the Distillers and Blenders Association of Nigeria signed an agreement with the Federal Ministry of Health and NAFDAC in December 2018 to phase out alcohol in sachets and PET bottles below 200ml by January 31, 2024. The deadline was later extended […]

Trump says Putin agreed to pause Kyiv strikes during extreme cold

United States President Donald Trump says Russian leader Vladimir Putin has agreed to his personal request to pause missile strikes on Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities during an extreme cold spell. Russia’s recent attacks on Ukraine’s power infrastructure have left millions facing blackouts, heating shortages and water cuts as temperatures plunge, creating a new humanitarian emergency across the country. Trump told a cabinet meeting that he asked Putin not to fire on Kyiv and surrounding towns for a week because of the “extraordinary” cold. He claimed Putin accepted the request, describing the response as “very nice” and saying people had warned him the call would be a waste of time. Trump did not say exactly when the conversation took place or when the pause in strikes would begin. The Kremlin has not confirmed any such truce. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, […]

Petrol price may rise again as crude oil hits new high

Nigerians may face another round of petrol price increases as crude oil prices continue to climb on the international market. Nigeria’s Bonny Light crude has risen to 70.30 dollars per barrel from 64 dollars last week, about a 10 per cent increase and the highest level so far this year. Brent crude now trades at 70.15 dollars per barrel, up from 66 dollars, while Murban crude has moved to 68.01 dollars from 65.20 dollars. Earlier in the week, filling stations raised petrol pump prices to an average of 850 naira per litre from 750 naira, citing the rise in crude prices. The Dangote Refinery and oil marketers argued that crude oil is the main input cost and that higher crude prices inevitably push up fuel prices. However, while crude prices went up by about 6.2 per cent, the local petrol […]
