Petrol price may rise again as crude oil hits new high

Nigerians may face another round of petrol price increases as crude oil prices continue to climb on the international market. Nigeria’s Bonny Light crude has risen to 70.30 dollars per barrel from 64 dollars last week, about a 10 per cent increase and the highest level so far this year. Brent crude now trades at 70.15 dollars per barrel, up from 66 dollars, while Murban crude has moved to 68.01 dollars from 65.20 dollars. Earlier in the week, filling stations raised petrol pump prices to an average of 850 naira per litre from 750 naira, citing the rise in crude prices. The Dangote Refinery and oil marketers argued that crude oil is the main input cost and that higher crude prices inevitably push up fuel prices. However, while crude prices went up by about 6.2 per cent, the local petrol […]

NAFDAC clarifies sachet alcohol ban, says no company shut

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control has clarified that it has not shut down any alcohol producing company while enforcing the ban on alcoholic drinks in sachets and small containers below 200 millilitres. The agency said the enforcement, backed by a recent Senate resolution and the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, is aimed at protecting public health, especially children, adolescents and young adults, from harmful alcohol use. NAFDAC Director General, Prof Mojisola Adeyeye, explained that the action targets only alcohol packaged in sachets and containers smaller than 200ml, not manufacturers themselves. “NAFDAC did not close down any company that makes alcohol. The agency only bans alcohol in sachets and small containers less than 200ml,” she said. She stressed that the policy is a public health intervention, not a punishment. “This ban is not punitive; […]

World number one Aryna Sabalenka powered into her fourth consecutive Australian Open final with a dominant 6 2, 6 3 win over Ukraine’s Elina Svitolina in a politically charged semi final in Melbourne. The Belarusian, chasing a third Melbourne crown, denied 12th seed Svitolina the chance to become the first Ukrainian woman to reach a Grand Slam singles final in the Open era.
