ISWAP second in command killed as military steps up Sambisa offensive

Troops of Operation HADIN KAI have killed Abu Khalid, the reported second in command of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), during a major night offensive in the Sambisa Forest area of Borno State.​ The operation, launched around 11:00 p.m. on Saturday in the Komala general area of Konduga Local Government Area, also resulted in the elimination of at least 10 other fighters linked to the terror group. A military source described Abu Khalid as a key figure in the insurgent hierarchy, responsible for coordinating operations and logistics across the Sambisa axis.​ The latest success came less than 24 hours after troops neutralised another top ISWAP commander, Julaibib, during a fierce battle around Kimba in Damboa Local Government Area. Brains behind alleged coup knew the consequences – Defence Minister

Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa (retd), says the military officers detained over the recent alleged coup plot were fully aware of the gravity of their actions before moving against the government.​ Speaking in an interview with Turkish public broadcaster TRT, Musa said the suspects “must have made up their minds when they decided to do this and must have considered their families,” insisting they are prepared to “face the wrath” if found guilty. US adds Niger to highest risk ‘Do Not Travel’ list for 2026

The United States has added Niger to its Level 4 “Do Not Travel” advisory list for 2026, citing worsening insecurity, terrorism, kidnapping, violent crime, civil unrest and weak emergency and healthcare services. In the notice issued by the US Department of State on January 30, Americans were warned to avoid all travel to Niger, with officials stressing that US authorities cannot provide routine or emergency consular services outside the capital, Niamey. Non essential US government staff and their families have been ordered to leave the country because of safety risks. The advisory referenced recent violent incidents, including a gunfight involving Islamic State linked militants at Diori Hamani International Airport in Niamey, as evidence of the deteriorating security environment. Nigerian Army renovates 91 year old primary school in Sokoto

The Nigerian Army has renovated the 91 year old Magajin Rafi Model Primary School in Sokoto State under the Chief of Army Staff Special Intervention Civil Military Cooperation Scheme. The project was executed on the recommendation of Major General Abbas Idris, an alumnus of the school. At the inauguration on Saturday, Governor Ahmed Aliyu, represented by his deputy Idris Gobir, described the gesture as a powerful way of giving back and a major contribution to education in the state. NDLEA arrests Brazil returnee with cocaine hidden in body and footwear

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency has arrested a Brazil based Nigerian businessman, Uche Franklin Onyekwere, at Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, for allegedly smuggling cocaine concealed in his private parts and in the soles of his shoes. Onyekwere was picked up on Thursday, January 29, 2026, during inward clearance of South African Airways passengers arriving from Brazil via Johannesburg, following processed intelligence. A full body scan reportedly indicated illicit drug concealment, after which he was subjected to a strip search. Officials said a large parcel of white powdery substance later confirmed as cocaine was found wrapped around his right thigh, while two more wraps were discovered hidden in the soles of a pair of flat shoes he was wearing. Bandits burn Niger police station, church, abduct five in fresh attack

Bandits have again attacked Agwara local government area of Niger State, burning the divisional police station and a church and abducting about five residents in an early morning raid. The gunmen stormed Agwara in the early hours of Sunday, first overrunning the local police station before setting it ablaze. They later moved to the United Methodist Church in the town, where they burnt part of the building. This is the same area where about 300 pupils, students and teachers of St Mary’s Catholic School were abducted last year. Kunle Afolayan: I’ll only return to cinemas with better promo, fairer earnings
