Protests trail Herzog’s final day in Australia

Pro Palestine protesters gathered in central Melbourne on Thursday as Israeli President Isaac Herzog ended his four day visit to Australia. Similar demonstrations had already taken place in Canberra and in Sydney, where clashes with police led to arrests earlier in the week.​ Herzog travelled to Australia at the invitation of Prime Minister Anthony Albanese following the December 14 shooting at a Hanukkah event at Sydney’s Bondi Beach that killed 15 people. Critics accuse him of complicity in civilian deaths in Gaza and objected to the state visit while the war continues.​ Demonstrators in Melbourne’s central business district rallied outside Flinders Street Station, many wearing keffiyeh scarves and waving Palestinian flags. Russian strikes cut power and heat to thousands in Ukraine

Russia has launched a large overnight barrage of drones and missiles on Ukraine, knocking out power, heat and water for tens of thousands of people in several major cities. Officials said the latest wave is part of an intensified winter campaign targeting the country’s energy infrastructure.​ In Kyiv, Mayor Vitali Klitschko said around 3,500 apartment buildings were left without heating after critical facilities were hit. More than 100,000 families also lost electricity, with private energy firm DTEK confirming that one of its thermal power plants was struck. Veteran actress Omotola Jalade Ekeinde has advised people in relationships to be cautious about marrying into families that clearly dislike or resist them. She said persistent hostility from in laws can make an already demanding marriage even harder to sustain.​ Speaking on The Morayo Show, she urged partners first to do everything possible to build understanding and trust with a disapproving family. Actor Nkubi says his size made him unemployable

Actor and content creator Victor Udochukwu Nwaogu, popularly known as Nkubi, has opened up about facing stigma and rejection because of his physique. Kenya open to 2027 AFCON delay over election tensions

Kenya’s local organising committee says it would welcome a postponement of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations because of likely election related tensions in the region. Committee chair Nicholas Musonye told AFP that shifting the tournament to 2028 would be good for Kenya as the country heads toward general elections in August 2027.​ Musonye noted that past polls in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda have been marked by volatility and violence, raising concerns about guaranteeing security for a major continental competition. Judge steps down from EFCC cases against Malami

Justice Obiora Egwuatu has withdrawn from two cases filed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission against former Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami. He said he was recusing himself for personal reasons and in the interest of justice.​ Egwuatu had only recently received the matters after they were reassigned to him by the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, Justice John Tsoho. He announced his withdrawal shortly after a civil forfeiture suit on 57 properties allegedly linked to Malami was called.​ The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the cases were previously before Justice Emeka Nwite, who handled them as a vacation judge during the Christmas break. The files are expected to be sent back to the Chief Judge for reassignment to another judge.​

U.S. bill targets Kwankwaso, Miyetti Allah over alleged religious violations

A new bill before the United States Congress could see former Kano State governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso and some Fulani groups hit with visa bans and asset freezes over alleged violations of religious freedom. The draft law, titled Nigeria Religious Freedom and Accountability Act of 2026, seeks targeted sanctions under the Global Magnitsky Human Rights Accountability Act.​ The bill, sponsored by five US lawmakers including Riley Moore, lists Kwankwaso, Fulani ethnic nomad militias, the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria MACBAN and Miyetti Allah Kautal Hore among those that could face punishment.
