Opposition Coalition Files Application to Register New Party – ADA
A group of prominent opposition figures—including Atiku Abubakar , Nasir El-Rufai , Peter Obi , and several former governors—has formally submitted an application to INEC to register a new political party: the All Democratic Alliance (ADA) .
This move marks a shift from earlier plans to align with existing parties like the Social Democratic Party (SDP) and African Democratic Congress (ADC) .
Instead, the group has chosen to build its own platform under the banner of the Nigeria National Coalition Group (NNCG) .
The application was submitted on Thursday after a meeting in Abuja , with INEC confirming receipt on Friday, June 21, 2025 .
Leadership and Structure of the Proposed Party
Leaders of the proposed party include:
- Chief Akin Anderson Rickets – Protem National Chairman
- Abdullahi Musa Elayo – Protem National Secretary
Rickets signed the letter to INEC, stating:
“We respectfully request the registration of our association, the All Democratic Alliance (ADA), as a political party.”
He added that this follows the decision of the Nigerian National Coalition Group to support a unified political movement.
The party’s slogan will be “Justice for All” , with its national secretariat listed on official documents.
Attached to the application were:
- Party flag
- Manifesto
- Constitution
- Logo and minutes of the founding meeting
These documents are meant to show ADA’s alignment with Section 40 and 222 of the Constitution , as well as Section 75 of the Electoral Act (2022) .
Other Opposition Figures Linked to ADA
Several notable political actors have been named as part of the coalition forming ADA, including:
- Peter Obi
- Aminu Tambuwal
- John Oyegun
- Rauf Aregbesola
- Abubakar Malami
- Babachir Lawal
- Uche Secondus
- Osita Chidoka
- Nnenna Ukeje
The group aims to unite opposition forces under one umbrella to offer a credible alternative to the ruling APC in the 2027 general elections .
FG Dismisses Move as Overhyped
Reacting to the development, Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo , downplayed the significance of the move on social media.
He called the application “just another attempt at party registration,” and said labeling it a “coalition” was misleading.
“There is no real coalition here. Just a few individuals exercising their right to form a party.”
He accused the group of exaggerating its influence and trying to create unnecessary hype.
“It’s psychological warfare on Nigerians—a weak attempt at mass appeal.”
Keyamo also compared the move to the formation of the APC in 2013 , calling the current effort a “pedestrian joke” .
“This is not a merger. It is not a coalition. It is just another political party trying to register.”
