The District Chief Executive (DCE) for Anloga, Sandra Seyram Kpedor, together with traditional authorities and the Volta Regional Environmental Health Directorate, has warned residents who fail to participate in the National Sanitation Day clean-up exercise. She stressed that sanitation is a shared responsibility, and neglecting communal clean-up activities worsens environmental conditions in communities. Defaulters, she cautioned, will be prosecuted to serve as a deterrent to others. Speaking during the exercise at Anloga, Kpedor reminded residents that the fight for cleaner surroundings cannot be left to government alone. She urged collective participation to improve hygiene and reduce the burden of disease in local communities. The Volta Regional Environmental Health Director, Madam Stella Kumedzro, underscored the importance of consistent clean-up efforts, pointing out that participation is crucial in preventing outbreaks of cholera, malaria, and typhoid. President Mahama Commends Greater Accra Minister for Sakumo Ramsar Demolition and Sanitation Campaign

President John Dramani Mahama has praised Greater Accra Regional Minister, Linda Obenewaa Akweley Ocloo, for leading demolition exercises to remove illegal structures from the Sakumo Ramsar site. He described the initiative as a difficult but necessary decision to protect wetlands and uphold environmental laws. Speaking at the relaunch of National Sanitation Day on Saturday, September 6, 2025, in Ogbojo, Accra, Mahama stressed that local authorities should have acted earlier to prevent encroachment. He warned that district officials who fail to enforce regulations risk dismissal, emphasizing that negligence has long contributed to the degradation of the Ramsar site. “The filling of the Ramsar site was not a one-day event; it had been going on for a long time. Some even had permits. A DCE like that should be sacked immediately,” he said, while applauding Ocloo’s firm action. The Regional Minister, on […]

Amb. Gifty Nyarko Urges Inclusive, Climate-Resilient Urban Development in Africa

At the inaugural Global Scholarship for Sustainable Built Environment Research Conference (SURE_BUILT), held from September 4–5, 2025, at the University of Johannesburg, Ambassador Gifty Nyarko, African Ambassador for Inclusive Urban Governance and Climate-Resilient Development, called for a radical shift in how African cities are researched, planned, and built. Speaking to scholars, engineers, architects, urban planners, policymakers, and development partners, she urged a move toward African-led, inclusive, and community-centered approaches to urban development. “The question is not whether Africa is urbanizing — but whose knowledge is shaping that urban future, and whose voices are being left behind,” she said. Nyarko warned that African cities remain disproportionately vulnerable to climate change, inequality, and exclusion, which cannot be solved through fragmented disciplines or externally imposed frameworks. She emphasized that true resilience requires dismantling hierarchies in knowledge production and shifting from “research for communities” […]

Students of St. Stephen’s Presbyterian Senior High/Technical School (STEPSS) in Asiakwa, Abuakwa South Municipality, can finally breathe a sigh of relief after years of enduring a severe water crisis. For months, the shortage of potable water forced students to spend hours searching for water, skip classes, and even risk their lives crossing busy roads in search of safe drinking sources. To help address this long-standing problem, Linda Dor Enterprises Limited has constructed and handed over three mechanized boreholes to underserved communities in Akyem Asiakwa, including STEPSS. The boreholes, equipped with pumping machines, are expected to serve about 3,000 people, covering both students and surrounding residents. During the handover ceremony, STEPSS Headmaster, Rev. New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer hopeful, Kennedy Agyapong, has criticized rivals in the party’s leadership race, arguing that any economic vision centered on International Monetary Fund (IMF) negotiations is a sign of failure. In a post on X (formerly Twitter) on September 6, Mr. Agyapong described Ghana’s repeated reliance on IMF bailouts as evidence of weak leadership. “You want to lead Ghana, yet your main concern is who can negotiate best with the IMF? Let me be clear: If your vision for Ghana starts with a trip to the IMF, you have already failed,” he stated. He emphasized his goal of building a self-reliant economy strong enough to render the IMF irrelevant.
