The Conference of Heads of Assisted Secondary Schools (CHASS) has announced that senior high schools across Ghana will not participate in the 2025 National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ) due to financial constraints. Bright Simons Blasts Intermediaries Over GH¢7bn Leak in Ghana’s Gold-for-Oil Programme

Vice President of IMANI Africa, Bright Simons, has sharply criticised the use of intermediaries in Ghana’s Gold-for-Oil programme, following a new report by the think tank that revealed a GH¢7 billion leakage. Speaking on JoyNews’s Newsfile, Mr. Simons said the intended beneficiaries—the Ghanaian public—did not gain from the initiative. Instead, he claimed, a network of brokers and middlemen reaped significant profits from the monetisation process. “The eventual beneficiaries of this case were the brokers and the middlemen,” Mr. Simons stated. “The only people who got any benefit are those who were in the middle during the monetisation, enabling the shipment of the fuel to BOST and others.” He argued that Ghana could have met its objectives through a simpler, more transparent approach—without relying on opaque and costly intermediaries. “Ghana could simply have said, we have our domestic gold purchasing programme, […]

Agric Minister Credits Feed Ghana for Bumper Harvest

Minister of Food and Agriculture, Eric Opoku, has credited Ghana’s ongoing bumper harvest to the government’s flagship Feed Ghana Programme, describing it as proof of the initiative’s success. His comments respond to concerns from farmers in several communities who say they are struggling to find buyers despite producing food in record quantities. Speaking on Citi FM on Wednesday, Mr Opoku said the challenge is not isolated but part of a nationwide outcome driven by the government’s intervention. “The farmers in many parts of the country are complaining that they have produced in quantities beyond the market, and they are not getting buyers. In Asunafo South, for example, the youth who participated in the Feed Ghana Programme told me they have been harvesting rice in large volumes and are looking for a market. What we are seeing is a nationwide bumper […]

UG Scholar Criticises Mahama’s UN Reparations Call, Cites Africa’s Role in Slave Trade

The Head of the Centre for European Studies at the University of Ghana, Dr Kwame Asah-Asante, has criticised former President John Mahama’s call for reparations during his recent address at the United Nations General Assembly, describing the demand as misplaced. Speaking on the AM Show on JoyNews, Dr Asah-Asante acknowledged that many have hailed the ex-president’s speech as bold and visionary. “It is an apt description of a speech from a leader who is visionary, who fears nobody, and a leader worth his salt. I have no problem with that, and I concede to a large extent that yes, the speech had what it takes to be presented at that forum,” he said. However, he disagreed with the focus on reparations for slavery, arguing that Africa cannot be absolved of responsibility in the transatlantic slave trade. “The president touched on […]
