“Good Riddance to Bad Rubbish” – Wike’s Aide Slams Atiku’s PDP Exit
Lere Olayinka , the Senior Special Assistant on Media to FCT Minister Nyesom Wike , has publicly criticized former Vice President Atiku Abubakar over his resignation from the PDP , calling it a case of “good riddance to bad rubbish.”
Olayinka made the remarks in an interview with Channels Television on Thursday, describing Atiku as a “serial defector” who has long served as a tool against the PDP.
“The media should headline this as: ‘Atiku Leaves PDP Again.’ He’s done this since 2007.”
He added:
“He is the spoiled apple that infected the party’s basket.”
“Atiku Is a Party Wrecker” – Olayinka
Olayinka accused Atiku of sabotaging the PDP’s 2003 Lagos campaign while serving as Vice President under the party.
“If we had won Lagos back then, Nigeria’s political future would be different.”
He also reminded listeners that Atiku was the first sitting VP to defect —moving to the Action Congress in 2007 before switching to APC in 2015 .
“Now he’s gone again after failing to rebuild the party. Did a doctor prescribe the presidency as a cure for his obsession?”
Olayinka called Atiku’s behavior “pathological” and said his departure is a relief for the PDP.
“We can now rebuild without this recurring decimal.”
He also defended his principal, Nyesom Wike , for remaining in the PDP despite serving in a Tinubu-led APC government .
“Serving doesn’t mean defecting. Bola Ige served under PDP. Atiku is the real party wrecker.”
“Coalition of Confusion Will Collapse” – Olayinka Warns
Olayinka also cast doubt on Atiku’s new political alliance, calling it a “coalition of confusion.”
“This group will collapse. He’ll try to come back. But we must shut the door.”
He warned that Atiku’s influence is overestimated and questioned the political weight of his allies.
“Can Dele Momodu even win his polling unit? Publishing photo books doesn’t make you a political force.”
Atiku’s Spokesman Hits Back
In response, Phillip Shuaibu , Atiku’s spokesperson, described the resignation as a moral stand against a weakened opposition and a government that is turning Nigeria into a one-party state .
“Atiku didn’t give up. He’s refusing to enable a dying PDP that can’t confront this rudderless government.”
He dismissed Olayinka’s criticism of Atiku’s use of the vice-presidential coat of arms , comparing it to practices in the United States .
“Even U.S. ex-presidents retain official seals. This is ceremonial, not immoral.”
On the timing of the resignation during national mourning for ex-President Buhari , Shuaibu clarified:
“Atiku was in Daura for three days mourning. Unlike some aides who insulted Buhari on social media.”
He remained noncommittal on Atiku’s 2027 ambitions:
“2027 is far off. Our focus now is on stopping the government from annihilating the opposition.”
