Why Record Label Choice Matters Tiwa Savage Advises Young Artists

Article arrow_drop_down

Afrobeats superstar Tiwa Savage has shared important advice for young musicians saying that choosing the right record label is one of the most critical decisions in their careers.

The award-winning singer revealed this insight after leaving her former label and reflected on how she did not fully appreciate its importance until after she departed.

Tiwa explained that some record labels view artists as dollar signs and once they stop making hits they are discarded. She said this reality makes it essential for young artists to be careful about which label they sign with.

Despite pressure from fans and industry insiders to sign artists to her own label Tiwa has said she will not be signing any artists because managing other musicians is too stressful.

She told Forbes Africa that she might be sleeping and wake up to find her artist trending for something negative. Instead of running a record label she is creating a music school where aspiring musicians can get proper training and mentorship before signing with labels that can support them.

Tiwa also advised young artists not to rush to fame but to build a strong foundation first. She said the early stages are the most freeing for artists and they should cherish that period of creativity without limitations.

The queen of Afrobeats emphasized that African artists must own their art publishing and labels instead of seeking validation from foreign markets. She said African artists should build their own platforms strong enough for others to try to break into them.

African music entering a ‘correction phase’, not decline – Tiwa Savage

Afrobeats star Tiwa Savage has said African music is not in decline but is instead entering a “correction” or “maturation” phase following several years of explosive global growth. Speaking as a keynote voice at a recent creative conference, she noted that after the initial Afrobeats boom, the industry is now naturally adjusting, filtering out hype and rewarding more structured, long‑term work. Savage explained that some people misread the current slowdown in viral hits or international chart dominance as a slump, when it is actually a normal cycle in which markets stabilise and audiences become more selective. In her view, this phase is healthy because it pushes African artists, labels and managers to focus on quality, professionalism and building sustainable brands rather than chasing quick trends. She pointed out that African music has already proven its global appeal, with Afrobeats and […]
