Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has urged his teammates to remain calm and focused after their 1-0 victory over Real Madrid in the Champions League on Tuesday, describing the win as their best performance of the season.
The Reds have endured a difficult run, losing six of their previous seven matches before back-to-back wins against Aston Villa and Real Madrid. Their defensive struggles had seen them go ten games without a clean sheet.
Madrid arrived at Anfield in top form but were limited to few chances as Liverpool controlled the game, with Thibaut Courtois preventing a heavier defeat for the Spanish side.
“In a world of chaos, you have to stay calm and keep perspective,” said Van Dijk. “We all know how football works — it can change overnight.”
Arsenal currently sit seven points ahead of Liverpool at the top of the Premier League and have recorded eight consecutive clean sheets. Van Dijk praised the Gunners’ defensive discipline and urged Liverpool to take a similar approach.
“You can see Arsenal are flying, and it’s because of clean sheets and not conceding chances,” he said. “We have the quality to hurt anyone on the break, but it starts with defending. You saw the hard work today.”
Liverpool face another major challenge on Sunday when they take on Manchester City and their in-form striker Erling Haaland, who has scored 26 goals this season for club and country.
“We have to keep going,” Van Dijk added. “Sunday is going to be another difficult one.”
Manager Arne Slot credited Anfield’s atmosphere for lifting the team’s performance, saying it played a key role in their improved form over the past week.
“It helps to play in front of these fans,” said Slot. “A great performance against a team that had lost only once all season. It could have been more.”
Trent Alexander-Arnold, who returned to Anfield as a Real Madrid substitute, received a mixed reaction from the crowd. Meanwhile, young defender Conor Bradley impressed by keeping Vinicius Junior quiet, while Van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate successfully contained Kylian Mbappe.
“Conor was outstanding,” Slot said. “To face Vinicius one-on-one so many times is not easy. He did an incredible job.”
The win boosts Liverpool’s confidence ahead of their Premier League clash with Manchester City, as they look to strengthen their title defence and close the gap on league leaders Arsenal.
