US Secretary of State Rubio denies fashion inspiration from Maduro

Article arrow_drop_down

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has dismissed claims that he took fashion inspiration from deposed Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro after a photo of him in a grey Nike tracksuit went viral online. Rubio was photographed aboard Air Force One in the outfit while travelling with President Donald Trump to China for high-level talks.

Social media users quickly noticed that the tracksuit looked similar to the Nike Tech Fleece worn by Maduro when he was captured by US forces and pictured handcuffed inside a helicopter in January. The resemblance sparked a wave of memes and comments suggesting the top US diplomat was trolling or mocking the ousted Venezuelan strongman.

Responding to reporters’ questions in Beijing, Rubio laughed off the comparison and insisted there was no hidden message behind his choice of clothing. “There’s no context. It’s a nice suit,” he said, adding jokingly that if anything, “he copied me, because I had it before him.”

Rubio stressed that he has “no love” for Maduro and would never deliberately model his appearance on the former president, whom Washington has long accused of corruption and authoritarianism. He explained that he simply changed out of formal wear into something more comfortable for the long-haul flight and did not even know the photo was being taken.

The episode has added a lighter, viral twist to a serious trip focused on US–China relations, Iran and global security. Nonetheless, it has also revived online discussion of Maduro’s dramatic capture and the images that have come to symbolise his fall from power.

Fierce lobbying, tension as APC primaries begin

Intense lobbying and growing tension have greeted the All Progressives Congress’ nationwide primaries as the ruling party begins the process of selecting its candidates ahead of the 2027 general elections. The primaries, which kicked off with House of Representatives contests, have already exposed fresh cracks in several state chapters. In many states, aspirants and their supporters are said to be locked in last-minute meetings with governors, ministers and other power brokers in a bid to secure party tickets. Reports indicate that hotel lobbies in Abuja and major state capitals are now packed with politicians seeking endorsements, funding and favourable word from key stakeholders. Consensus talks reportedly collapsed in a number of states on Thursday night after rival camps rejected attempts by party leaders to impose “unity candidates”. In some areas, aggrieved aspirants have threatened legal action or defection if they […]

Tambuwal steps down from Senate race, backs ex-commissioner

Former Governor of Sokoto State, Senator Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, has stepped down from the 2027 Sokoto South Senatorial race. The ex-speaker confirmed he would no longer seek re-election to the Senate, despite earlier indications that he would be on the ballot. Bodinga, a long-time ally, served in Tambuwal’s cabinet during his time as governor and is now being positioned as his preferred successor for the Sokoto South seat. In a message shared by his media team, Tambuwal said his decision followed wide consultations with political associates and constituents. He explained that he chose to step aside to allow “fresh energy” to emerge, while still offering guidance and support from behind the scenes. […]

The President noted that his government’s decision to unify the exchange rate, phase out fuel subsidies and streamline business regulations has sent a strong signal to the international community. India Faces Pressure From Iran War

As the conflict involving Iran enters its third month with no clear resolution in sight, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has urged citizens to reduce spending and conserve resources amid growing economic pressure linked to rising global energy costs. Speaking during a public event in Hyderabad, Modi encouraged Indians to work from home when possible, limit unnecessary foreign travel, reduce fuel consumption and avoid excessive purchases of gold. The appeal has drawn comparisons to the Covid-19 period, when the government relied on nationwide public participation to manage economic and social challenges. This time, the government’s focus is on protecting India’s foreign exchange reserves and limiting pressure on the national economy as the war in the Middle East disrupts global energy markets. India remains heavily dependent on imported energy, purchasing nearly 90% of its crude oil and about half of its […]

Alex Murdaugh to Face New Murder Trial

Alex Murdaugh, the former lawyer convicted of murdering his wife and son, is set to face a new trial after South Carolina’s Supreme Court overturned his murder convictions. The court ruled unanimously that Murdaugh did not receive a fair trial in connection with the 2021 killings of his wife Maggie and son Paul. Judges concluded that comments and actions by court clerk Rebecca Hill improperly influenced the jury during the original proceedings. According to the ruling, Hill encouraged jurors to closely monitor Murdaugh’s testimony and suggested they should not fully trust him while the trial was underway. The high-profile case attracted massive international attention and inspired documentaries, podcasts, books and television productions focused on the powerful South Carolina legal family. Murdaugh, 56, had originally been sentenced to two life terms for the murders of his wife, 52-year-old Maggie Murdaugh, and […]

Wes Streeting Quits Starmer Government

Wes Streeting has resigned as UK health secretary following days of growing speculation about tensions within the Labour government and questions surrounding Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s leadership. In a strongly worded resignation letter, Streeting criticised Starmer’s leadership style and warned that the Labour Party risks losing public confidence if it fails to provide a clearer political direction. Although he stopped short of officially launching a leadership campaign, Streeting suggested Labour should begin preparing for a future leadership transition and called for a “broad” contest involving multiple candidates. The former health secretary said remaining in government after losing confidence in the prime minister would have been “dishonourable and unprincipled.” Despite his resignation, Streeting praised recent progress within the National Health Service and stressed that his departure was not linked to policy disagreements, but rather concerns about the leadership of both the […]
