Oti Region Prosecutes 100 for Sanitation Offenses Amid Typhoid Surge

More than 100 people have been prosecuted in the Krachi East municipality of the Oti Region for flouting sanitation by-laws. The Oti Regional Environmental and Sanitation Taskforce brought the offenders before the Dambai District Magistrate Court on charges ranging from indiscriminate dumping of refuse to poor sanitation practices and open defecation. The crackdown follows a surge in typhoid fever cases in the region, with over 23,000 infections recorded in the first half of 2025, largely traced to poor hygiene and unsafe water sources. Regional Environmental Health Prosecutor Patrick K. Gbafa said the prosecutions are intended to protect public health, not merely punish. Offenders received fines between GH¢600 and GH¢840.44, while landlords without toilet facilities were ordered to provide them within three months or risk prosecution. Magistrate Alhassan Dramani, who recently recovered from typhoid, cautioned residents to take sanitation seriously. The […]

NPP Condemns Alleged Death Threats and Violence by NDC Officials

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has condemned alleged death threats and acts of violence by some officials of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) against its leaders. In a statement signed by General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong, the NPP accused the NDC’s First National Vice Chairman, Chief Sofo Azorka, and Abuakwa North Constituency Communication Officer, Alhaji Abdul Wahab Amadu, of threatening Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, National Organiser Henry Nana Boakye, and Nsawam-Adoagyiri MP Frank Annor Dompreh. The party also alleged that Chief Sofo Azorka and his associates physically attacked NPP’s Third National Vice Chairman, Alhaji Osman Masawudu. It warned that such acts undermine Ghana’s democracy and risk worsening insecurity, especially following the country’s recent drop in the Global Peace Index. The NPP said it will lodge formal complaints with the Ghana Police Service and called on the Inspector General of Police […]

Road Works Continue in Akwatia After By-Election

Road construction works in parts of Akwatia are still ongoing days after Tuesday’s by-election, despite earlier suspicions that the projects were quickly rolled out to influence voters. JoyNews observed active roadworks across the constituency, including in Kusi and Tarkrowase, the hometowns of both parents of MP-elect Bernard Bediako. A day after the polls, tipper trucks and graders were still on site, with construction teams preparing the roads for asphalting. Similar activity was recorded in Tarkrowase. A contractor working on some of the projects, who spoke off the record, revealed that the roads had been abandoned for nearly seven years. He explained that the works are currently being executed under a daily contract arrangement. While admitting that construction only began less than a week before the election, he dismissed claims that the timing was politically motivated. Bernard Bediako, the NDC candidate, […]

Onion Farmers Urge Government to Regulate Imports

Onion farmers in Asante Akyem North are calling on the government to regulate the importation of foreign onions in order to protect local produce and ensure a stable market for Ghanaian farmers. They argue that onions brought in from Burkina Faso, Nigeria, and Niger are undermining local sales, as traders and consumers often prefer the cheaper imports over homegrown produce. Farmers told Adom News that this year’s harvest has been particularly good, with a bumper yield capable of meeting national demand. They are urging authorities to introduce controls on imported onions, especially during the local harvest season, to safeguard their livelihoods. Moro Adamu, chairman of the Asante Akyem North Onion Farmers Association, appealed for government intervention through policies that would not only protect the onion industry but also encourage youth to embrace agriculture. He added that such support could help […]
