Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka, has announced plans to upgrade its Pre-Science Centre at Mbaukwu community in Awka South Local Government Area of Anambra State into a fully-fledged mini-campus of the institution.
The Vice-Chancellor of UNIZIK, Professor Ugochukwu Bond Stanley Anyaehie, disclosed the development, stating that the upgrade will bring attendant benefits including improved infrastructure, better learning facilities, and enhanced accommodation for students enrolled in the university’s pre-science programme.
The Mbaukwu-based Pre-Science Centre was designed to provide intensive and effective remedial and preparatory learning for students seeking admission into science-related programmes. The programme covers core science subjects including Mathematics, English, Biology, Physics, Chemistry, and Geography for core science students, while non-core science students study Mathematics, English, Geography, Economics, Government, and Literature—a total of six subjects.
The Pre-Science Programme lasts for one academic year spanning two semesters, with breaks between sessions. It also prepares candidates for JAMB and other entrance examinations. Admission requires a minimum of five (5) O’level credits in SSCE, NECO, GCE, or NABTEB at not more than two sittings, and candidates awaiting results must present them before programme completion.
The heart fee for the programme is N10,000, and admitted candidates are required to report to the Pre-Science Office at the Utility Building, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, for documentation and payment of school fees, other compulsory fees, and hostel accommodation. Students must submit files containing printed application forms, photocopies of certificates, payment receipts, birth certificates, clearance forms, and two recent passport photographs.
The upgrade to mini-campus status is expected to improve access to the facility for Mbaukwu community residents and students from across Anambra State, providing enhanced academic support and better learning conditions for those preparing for university-level science studies.
