Trump Vows to End Crime in Chicago, Threatens Troop Deployment

Article arrow_drop_down

U.S. President Donald Trump has vowed to swiftly curb crime in Chicago, branding the city the “most dangerous in the world” and hinting at sending federal troops to restore order.

In a post on his Truth Social platform Tuesday, Trump declared:

“I will solve the crime problem fast, just like I did in DC. Chicago is the worst and most dangerous city in the world, by far.”

The president cited statistics claiming 54 people were shot in Chicago over the holiday weekend, including eight deaths, with similar figures recorded in previous weeks.

He added that Illinois Governor JB Pritzker, a Democrat, “needs help badly, he just doesn’t know it yet.”

Trump followed up with a provocative all-caps message:

“CHICAGO IS THE MURDER CAPITAL OF THE WORLD!”

The remarks come amid escalating tensions between Trump and Democratic leaders over his use of federal troops in U.S. cities. Thousands of National Guard troops and U.S. Marines were deployed to Los Angeles in June and to Washington, D.C. in August, actions Trump has credited with reducing crime.

However, critics say the moves amount to militarization of civilian policing. On Tuesday, Federal Judge Charles Breyer ruled that Trump’s deployment of troops in Los Angeles violated the law, warning it could lead to “a national police force with the President as its chief.” His injunction, set to take effect September 12, may be reviewed by the U.S. Supreme Court.

In Chicago, Democratic Mayor Brandon Johnson strongly rejected Trump’s threats at a Labor Day rally.

“No federal troops in the city of Chicago! No militarized force in the city of Chicago!” he declared, vowing to defend the city’s autonomy.

Meanwhile, protesters marched across Chicago in a “Workers over Billionaires” rally, denouncing Trump’s proposal and pledging resistance if troops are deployed.

With the city on edge, the standoff between Trump and local leaders is likely to intensify in the coming days as Chicago braces for potential federal intervention.

Global oil prices climbed sharply after Iran intensified strikes across the Middle East, raising fears of disruption to energy supplies. Brent crude, the international benchmark, jumped 10% on Monday to briefly exceed $82 per barrel following reports that at least three vessels were attacked near the Strait of Hormuz over the weekend. Natural gas prices also surged by up to 25% amid concerns about supply constraints. In the UK, the FTSE 100 opened nearly 1% lower, with airline shares hit by widespread airspace closures across the Middle East. European markets experienced sharper losses: France’s CAC […]
