Nigerian security forces have put down a fresh outbreak of communal violence in Taraba State, neutralising four armed militias in a decisive operation. The troops moved in after clashes erupted between rival groups in one of the state’s flashpoint communities, preventing what officials say could have been a far more devastating escalation.
According to security sources, the operation combined ground troops with intelligence-led raids on suspected militia hideouts. Weapons were recovered and several suspects were arrested as soldiers fanned out across the area to stop reprisals and reopen key roads.
The latest incident comes against the backdrop of recurring communal crises in Taraba, often tied to disputes over land, grazing routes and traditional authority. The army’s 6 Brigade and other security agencies have recently intensified patrols and peace efforts in Bali, Gassol and other tension-prone local government areas.
Community leaders and residents have been urged to cooperate with security operatives, share timely information and shun the use of local militias for self-defence. Authorities warn that reliance on armed groups fuels cycles of revenge attacks and undermines long-term peacebuilding in the state.
