Tinubu’s 2027 Running Mate To Be Named After APC Convention – Presidency
The presidency has responded to rumors that President Bola Tinubu may replace Vice President Kashim Shettima ahead of the 2027 general elections .
Bayo Onanuga , Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, said such claims are baseless and premature.
He revealed that any decision on a running mate will be made after the APC holds its national convention in 2026 .
“A candidate must emerge before we talk about a running mate,” he said.
Onanuga added:
“That’s how it happened under President Buhari. First nomination, then vice-presidential pick.”
He also noted that the final decision will follow INEC’s official election timetable .
No Rift Between Tinubu and Shettima – Onanuga
Onanuga dismissed reports of tension between the president and vice president.
“There is no existing rift or plan to drop VP Shettima.”
He urged the public not to rush into speculation, stressing that decisions around vice presidential candidates always come after the main ticket is settled .
“No Pattern of Dumping Deputies” – Clarification
Onanuga also rejected claims that Tinubu has a habit of replacing deputies, referencing his time as Lagos State governor .
“He changed deputy governors twice while in Lagos, but each change had specific political reasons.”
He said it’s misleading to suggest a pattern without understanding the context.
“That’s what I’m explaining—it’s not just about habit, it’s about circumstances.”
