Suspected Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) terrorists have abducted 42 schoolchildren in Borno State, North-East Nigeria. The attackers stormed Mussa Primary and Junior Government Day Secondary School (GDSS) in Mussa, Askira-Uba Local Government Area, during early morning lessons on Friday.
Senator Mohammed Ali Ndume, who represents Borno South, confirmed the abductions, citing information he received from school authorities. He said four students were taken from the secondary school section, 28 pupils from the primary school and 10 other children from nearby residential houses, bringing the total to 42 victims.
Local sources said the terrorists rode into the community on about 18 motorcycles, with roughly three armed men on each bike. They reportedly opened fire on arrival, causing panic as pupils and teachers fled in different directions before the gunmen forced their way into the school premises and nearby homes.
Residents and community leaders have criticised the security response, noting that the school is located opposite a military camp. One source told reporters that soldiers allegedly withdrew when the shooting started, leaving teachers and children exposed to the attackers.
The latest abduction has revived painful memories of previous mass kidnappings in Borno, including the 2014 Chibok schoolgirls’ abduction. Mussa lies on the eastern fringe of the Sambisa Forest, a long-time stronghold of insurgents who continue to target soft civilian and educational facilities despite ongoing military operations.
Ndume has appealed to the Nigerian military and security agencies, particularly Operation Hadin Kai ground troops, to intensify search and rescue efforts. Human rights groups, including Amnesty International, have also called on authorities to urgently secure the children’s release and strengthen protection for schools across the region.

I feared my career had stalled three years before AMVCA win – Actress Linda Ejiofor
Nollywood actress Linda Ejiofor has revealed that she once feared her acting career had stalled, three years before her historic double win at the 2026 Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA). She said she went through a period of deep anxiety when quality roles seemed to dry up and she worried that the industry had moved on from her. According to Ejiofor, she took those concerns to God in prayer, asking specifically for a role that would challenge her and reignite her passion for acting. That prayer was eventually answered with two powerful projects – “The Serpent’s Gift” and “The Herd” – which would later change the trajectory of her career. At the 12th AMVCA, Linda made history as the first actress to win both Best Lead Actress and Best Supporting Actress on the same night. She clinched Best Lead […]

I was stereotyped in my early acting years – Actress Bolaji Ogunmola
Nollywood actress Bolaji Ogunmola has opened up about the challenges she faced in her early years in the movie industry, saying she was heavily stereotyped because of her looks. She revealed that producers and directors often judged her by her dark skin and curvy body, boxing her into a narrow range of roles. According to Ogunmola, many filmmakers preferred light‑skinned actresses for lead characters at the time, while she was frequently considered only for supporting or “side chick” roles. “It was almost like they wanted to put me in a box,” she recalled, noting that her body type was used as an excuse to limit the kind of characters she could play. The actress said these stereotypes made it difficult to show her full range as a performer and slowed her journey to more complex, leading roles. Over time, however, […]

Kelechi Iheanacho: It feels so good, I can’t let go of this trophy
Super Eagles striker Kelechi Iheanacho has expressed his delight after helping Celtic clinch the Scottish Premiership title, calling the triumph one of the sweetest moments of his career. Speaking in a post‑match interview while clutching the league trophy, the Nigerian forward said: “It feels good, it feels so good, I can’t let go of this trophy.” Iheanacho joined Celtic last summer and endured a mixed season disrupted by injury, but he played a crucial role in the title run‑in. Coming off the bench in the decisive game, he helped turn the tide for the Hoops as they secured the win needed to finish top of the table and extend their dominance in Scotland. Reflecting on the pressure of the occasion, Iheanacho admitted that the tension was enormous but said the team never lost belief. “It was a big tension and […]

FIFA holds talks with Iran over 2026 World Cup participation
FIFA has invited officials from the Football Federation Islamic Republic of Iran (FFIRI) for talks over the country’s participation at the 2026 World Cup, which will be staged in the United States, Canada and Mexico. The meeting is expected to take place at FIFA’s headquarters in Zurich and comes amid heightened political tensions and questions over Iran’s ability and willingness to play matches on U.S. soil. Iran had earlier hinted it might withdraw from the tournament following military clashes with the U.S. and concerns over travel restrictions, visas and security for players and officials. Despite this, FIFA President Gianni Infantino has repeatedly insisted that Iran will participate, stressing at the FIFA Congress that “of course Iran will be participating in the FIFA World Cup 2026” and will play in the United States. Reports say FIFA Secretary General Mattias Grafström will […]

Chelsea appoint Xabi Alonso as coach on four-year deal
Chelsea have appointed Spanish tactician Xabi Alonso as their new manager on a four-year deal, bringing an end to weeks of speculation over the club’s next head coach. The 44-year-old former Liverpool and Real Madrid midfielder will take charge from July 1, 2026, after agreeing a contract that runs until 2030. Alonso has been out of work since his brief spell in charge of Real Madrid ended in January, but his reputation remains high after previously guiding Bayer Leverkusen to an historic unbeaten Bundesliga title. Chelsea’s owners, BlueCo, identified him as their top target following the dismissal of Liam Rosenior and moved quickly to finalise personal terms. Reports say Alonso sought clear assurances over Chelsea’s transfer strategy and the extent of his authority before committing to the project. His title as manager rather than just head coach is seen as a significant […]

Trump says Xi agrees Iran must open strait, China says war shouldn’t have started
U.S. President Donald Trump says Chinese President Xi Jinping has agreed that Iran must reopen the Strait of Hormuz, but there is still no clear sign that Beijing will directly pressure Tehran to do so. Trump spoke while flying back from Beijing after two days of talks with Xi, where the crisis over Iran and global oil supplies dominated discussions. Iran has effectively shut the vital waterway, which previously carried about one‑fifth of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas, following joint U.S. and Israeli attacks on February 28. The disruption has triggered the biggest oil supply shock in history and sent energy prices soaring, piling pressure on economies already struggling with slow growth. Trump said both leaders shared the goal of preventing Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon and of restoring safe passage through the strait. He also revealed […]

Motorcycle rider injured after alleged Customs chase in Lagos
A commercial motorcycle rider has reportedly been injured in Lagos after an incident that eyewitnesses say followed a chase by operatives believed to be from the Nigeria Customs Service. Available reports indicate that the rider crashed while trying to evade the officers, sustaining injuries in the process. According to people at the scene, the rider lost control of the bike as he sped off, leading to a serious fall that left him and his passenger badly hurt. Emergency responders and traffic officials later arrived to move them to a nearby hospital for treatment and to clear the route for other road users. Some witnesses accused the officers involved of recklessness, claiming the pursuit put other motorists and pedestrians at risk. The incident has reignited public anger over aggressive enforcement tactics and previous clashes involving security operatives and commercial motorcyclists in […]

NAFDAC clears BON bread over two‑month shelf life controversy
The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has cleared Food & Food Integrated Company Limited, makers of BON Bread, over a viral allegation that its bread could stay fresh on a shelf for more than two months without moulding. The agency said its investigation found no evidence that the company violated approved safety standards or used unregulated preservatives in its products. NAFDAC Director‑General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, explained that the probe followed an April 13 video by a content creator who claimed a loaf supplied to her shop had remained without mould for “over two months.” Although the brand was not named in the clip, BON Bread later stepped forward, denying any wrongdoing and insisting that its products do not last beyond a few days under normal conditions. Adeyeye said NAFDAC inspectors visited the company’s facility, reviewed […]

Ebola: WHO declares global health emergency as death toll hits 81 in DRC, Uganda
The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared the current Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda a public health emergency of international concern, after a sharp rise in deaths and infections. The epidemic, caused by the rarer Bundibugyo strain of the virus, has so far killed at least 81 people in both countries and triggered a global health alert. According to WHO and Africa CDC figures, as of 16–17 May 2026 the DRC’s Ituri Province has reported eight laboratory-confirmed cases, 246 suspected cases and about 80 suspected deaths across health zones including Bunia, Rwampara and Mongbwalu. Uganda has confirmed two cases — including one death — in Kampala among travellers from Congo within 24 hours of each other. WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus made the emergency declaration after consulting authorities in Kinshasa and Kampala and convening […]

Tambuwal: ADC structure not built for Atiku, defends coalition exits
Former Sokoto State governor and Sokoto South senator, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, has said the African Democratic Congress (ADC) is not a party whose structure was built for former Vice President Atiku Abubakar or any single politician. Speaking on a Channels Television programme, he dismissed claims that the ADC had been hijacked to serve Atiku’s presidential ambition ahead of 2027. Tambuwal explained that the ADC’s ongoing coalition arrangements were designed as a broader platform for opposition forces, not a personal vehicle for Atiku. He insisted that decisions within the party are taken collectively by its organs and leaders, including chairman David Mark and other stakeholders, rather than being dictated by one individual. Reacting to the exit of key figures like Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso from the coalition, Tambuwal said their decisions were “personal choices” and not evidence of a crisis […]

DHQ details slain ISIS Al‑Minuki’s decade‑long terror network
Nigeria’s Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has given fresh details about the decade‑long terror network run by slain Islamic State commander Abu‑Bilal Al‑Minuki, also known as Abu‑Mainok. The senior ISIS figure was confirmed killed this week in a joint Nigerian–US operation targeting his compound in the Lake Chad Basin. According to military and diplomatic briefings, Al‑Minuki had been on the radar of Western and African intelligence services for years as a key architect of ISIS’ expansion into West and Central Africa. Sanctioned by the United States in 2023, he was accused of coordinating funding, training and logistics for Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) cells operating around Lake Chad and deep into the Sahel. DHQ assessments link Al‑Minuki to a web of attacks on military bases, ambushes on convoys, mass kidnappings and cross‑border raids in Nigeria, Niger, Chad and Cameroon over the […]

S&P upgrades Nigeria’s credit rating to ‘B’, cites economic reforms, FX gains
S&P Global Ratings has upgraded Nigeria’s long-term foreign and local currency sovereign credit ratings to ‘B’ from ‘B-’, in what marks the country’s first ratings upgrade by the agency in about 14 years. The outlook on the ratings is stable, while the short-term sovereign ratings were affirmed at ‘B’. In its latest review, S&P said Nigeria’s creditworthiness has improved on the back of President Bola Tinubu’s sustained economic reforms, including FX market liberalisation, subsidy removal and efforts to boost non-oil revenues. The agency noted that the unification and flexibilisation of the exchange rate have bolstered access to foreign currency and supported a more market-driven FX environment. S&P also cited recovering oil production, higher fiscal revenues and rising external reserves as key factors behind the upgrade. It pointed to improved external buffers helped by better FX liquidity, inflows from multilateral lenders […]
