Nigeria back on global economic frontline, says Shettima

Vice President Kashim Shettima has returned to Abuja after a week‑long diplomatic and economic mission to Guinea and Switzerland, declaring that Nigeria has reclaimed a frontline role in global economic and policy conversations. He represented President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the inauguration of Guinea’s President Mamadi Doumbouya in Conakry and led Nigeria’s delegation to the 2026 World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos. According to his media aide Stanley Nkwocha, Shettima said Nigeria used the trips to reaffirm its leadership within ECOWAS and open fresh bilateral channels, especially in agriculture and manufacturing. He stressed that the engagements underscored the Renewed Hope Agenda’s focus on regional solidarity and economic repositioning. A major highlight was the commissioning of Nigeria House Davos, the country’s first sovereign pavilion on the Davos Promenade, designed as a permanent investment hub for opportunities in solid minerals, agriculture and […]

Dangote refinery will make Nigeria net fuel exporter – Shettima

Vice President Kashim Shettima says the Dangote Refinery is positioning Nigeria to become a net exporter of refined petroleum products after decades as a net importer of value. Speaking at a High level Accra Reset Initiative meeting on the sidelines of the 2026 World Economic Forum in Davos, he said Africa’s prosperity must be homegrown, built on innovation, industry and interdependence rather than external aid. Shettima cited the Lagos based Dangote Refinery as proof of what happens “when African capital meets industrial ambition,” noting that it is gradually turning Nigeria into a major exporter of fuel. He argued that matching production with infrastructure and clear policies can move nations from being price takers to value makers in global markets. According to him, only by building domestic productive capacity can African countries convert their large populations and natural endowments into real, […]

Trump sends US ‘armada’ toward Gulf amid Iran tensions

President Donald Trump says a US “armada” is heading toward the Gulf as Washington keeps a close watch on Iran despite recently playing down the prospect of imminent military action. He told reporters on Air Force One, returning from the World Economic Forum in Davos, that the United States was sending a “massive fleet” toward Iran “just in case”, adding that he would rather avoid conflict but was monitoring Tehran “very closely”. Trump has repeatedly kept open the option of new strikes on Iran after backing Israel’s 12 day war in June aimed at degrading Iranian nuclear and ballistic missile capabilities. He said in Davos that US attacks on Iranian uranium enrichment sites last year were intended to prevent Tehran from developing a nuclear weapon, something Iran denies. The latest remarks come after weeks of seesaw rhetoric, with Trump at […]

Trump says US, NATO will ‘work something out’ on Greenland

Britain has approved China’s plan to build its largest embassy in Europe on the Royal Mint Court site near the Tower of London, ending a three year planning deadlock. The decision comes despite warnings from some British and U.S. politicians that the complex could boost Chinese espionage activities in the UK. The government took over the planning process after the local council rejected Beijing’s application in 2022, and an inquiry was held last year to review the project. Officials said all material considerations were assessed and that the approval is now final unless overturned in court. The move is expected to smooth the way for Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s planned visit to China, the first by a British leader since 2018. Chinese President Xi Jinping had previously asked Starmer to intervene, and both sides viewed the embassy decision as key […]
