Middle East crisis: NLC demands COLA, wage award, tax relief

The Nigeria Labour Congress has asked the Federal Government to introduce immediate measures such as cost of living allowance, wage awards and tax relief to cushion the impact of the ongoing Middle East crisis on Nigerian workers. The union said rising global tensions have worsened fuel prices, transport costs and inflation, deepening hardship for salaries that were already inadequate. NLC President Joe Ajaero noted that workers were struggling even before the latest spike in energy costs and warned that many households can no longer cope without urgent support. He explained that the current N70,000 minimum wage has been overtaken by inflation and does not reflect the real cost of food, transport, housing and basic services. NASU accuses govt of neglecting workers welfare

The Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) has accused the Federal Government of playing politics with the welfare of Nigerian workers. The union said officials often provoke strikes through neglect and insincerity, only to punish workers for exercising their rights. He described the move as a deliberate attempt to intimidate workers and criminalise legitimate union activities. Adeyemi said such behaviour exposes the government’s double standards and undermines industrial peace and workers’ confidence. He explained that unions only embark on strikes after the government repeatedly fails to honour agreements and ignores collective bargaining processes. “Union leaders are not irrational individuals who declare strikes for fun. Strikes are […]

SSANU, NASU extend strike ultimatum by two weeks

The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Universities and Allied Institutions (NASU) have extended their strike ultimatum to the Federal Government by two weeks. The two unions, under the Joint Action Committee (JAC), had earlier issued a seven-day ultimatum over unresolved welfare issues, including the “unjust disbursement of earned allowances” and non-payment of outstanding benefits. In a fresh letter addressed to their chapters on Tuesday, SSANU President Muhammed Ibrahim said the decision followed a meeting with the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education, Abel Enitan, on September 19, 2025. According to the letter, the government set up a joint consultative committee to address the unions’ demands, with representatives from the National Universities Commission (NUC), the Ministry of Education, and the Ministry of Labour in attendance. However, the unions noted that despite the […]
