Fears of One-Party Dominance Rise as Violent PDP Crisis Threatens Democracy

Fears of One-Party Dominance Rise as Violent PDP Crisis Threatens Democracy Nigeria’s democracy faces mounting threats as violent scenes at the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) headquarters expose deepening rifts within the opposition. The struggle between Makinde-Bala Mohammed leadership and the Wike-backed faction resulted in the storming of the party secretariat, tear gas confrontations, and journalists injured in Abuja. The Wike faction expelled three governors—Seyi Makinde, Bala Mohammed, and Dauda Lawal—and several senior party leaders, escalating what observers call the largest purge in PDP history. Amid police intervention, Kabiru Turaki and his allies accused “enemies of democracy” of assaulting the party and praised law enforcement for preventing further bloodshed, though the crisis forced meetings to be postponed. Reacting to the incident, opposition parties ADC and MCE warned the ruling APC was destabilizing the opposition and accused the government of abusing state […]

Wike’s Faction Takes Control of PDP Headquarters

A faction of the Peoples Democratic Party loyal to Nyesom Wike, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, has taken over the party’s national secretariat at Wadata Plaza in Abuja. The takeover happened ahead of multiple scheduled meetings by various groups within the PDP. The Taminu Turaki-led faction, which recently held a controversial convention in Ibadan, planned to meet at the secretariat in the morning. Simultaneously, the Abdulrahman-led group summoned emergency meetings of the National Executive Committee and Board of Trustees at the same location. Abdulrahman Mohammed, the factional National Chairman, was seen at the secretariat. Heavy security, including police, civil defence, and state security agents, was present around the premises to maintain order and prevent any disturbances. Protesters against Turaki’s faction appeared outside the secretariat, displaying signs and dancing as meetings began inside. The suspended National Secretary, Senator Samuel Anyanwu, […]

Wike Deserves National Apology Over Clash With Naval Officer — PANDEF

The Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF) has called for a national apology to the Minister of Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, following his clash with a naval officer in Abuja. PANDEF National Chairman, Ambassador Godknows Igali, urged President Tinubu to direct security agencies to investigate fully and bring those responsible to book, emphasizing respect for civil authority and professionalism in the military. Igali described the officer’s actions as a show of disdain for Wike’s office and an affront to presidential authority, noting Wike as one of the administration’s best-performing ministers. PANDEF insisted military personnel should not be used for non-core duties like guarding personal properties, and that Wike deserves both protection and respect while carrying out his official mandates in the FCT. The organization warned against glamorizing military insubordination and criticized retired officers allegedly issuing illegal orders.

No Officer or Soldier on Lawful Duty’ll Be Punished — Defence Minister

Defence Minister Mohammad Badaru Abubakar has assured that no officer or soldier performing lawful duties will be punished following the recent altercation between FCT Minister Nyesom Wike and military personnel in Abuja. Speaking at the Armed Forces Remembrance Day briefing, Badaru emphasized support for armed forces acting within the law, and praised operational milestones under President Tinubu—over 13,000 terrorists and criminals neutralized, 17,000 arrested, nearly 10,000 hostages rescued, and major bandit commanders defeated. Badaru celebrated advances in indigenous defence production and procurement, including armoured vehicles and drones, strengthening Nigeria’s security infrastructure. He stressed “whole-of-society” cooperation against insecurity, involving civil society and the private sector. Meanwhile, Wike’s aide, Lere Olayinka, addressed a retired naval chief’s complaints over disputed Abuja land, clarifying the property was originally designated for recreation, and urging aggrieved parties to confront those who sold illegally rather than government […]

Naval Officer in Face-Off with Wike Breached the Law, Says SAN

Constitutional law expert Prof. Sebastine Hon, SAN, has said the naval officer involved in an Abuja land face-off with FCT Minister Nyesom Wike violated the law. Hon condemned Naval Officer A.M. Yerima’s decision to block Wike’s access to a disputed plot, insisting military personnel are not bound to obey illegal or manifestly unjust orders. Citing Supreme Court rulings, Hon argued that the officer's conduct—guarding a private construction site under suspicious circumstances—was unlawful and breached both the Nigerian Constitution and military regulations. He stressed Wike's authority as FCT Minister, acting “in loco” of the President for Abuja land administration under Sections 297(2) and 302 of the 1999 Constitution, meaning Wike should not have been obstructed, even by a serving soldier. The SAN asserts the officer could face court martial for obstructing a public officer in performance of his duty. The incident, […]

Wike: I’ll Support Anyone Who Stands With Tinubu

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has pledged his full support to leaders and individuals who align themselves with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration. Speaking on Thursday at the flag-off of Lot 2 of the Karu Water Supply Project, Wike commended former FCT Senator Philip Aduda and Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) Chairman Christopher Maikalangu for their contributions to the development of the territory. “The chairman has direct access to us. Whatever he brings forward, we will support. I don’t know the party he belongs to, but I know he supports President Tinubu. Anybody who supports Tinubu, I will stand with them,” Wike said. He praised Maikalangu as “hardworking and committed,” noting that his leadership has brought visible projects to residents. Wike assured that his administration would continue to respond positively to the AMAC chairman’s requests, […]
