Survey: Nigerians among strongest supporters of global cooperation

Nigerians rank among the world’s top advocates for international cooperation, according to a new global survey by The Rockefeller Foundation. The poll, released ahead of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, found that 71% of Nigerian adults support nations working together to solve shared challenges. This places Nigeria in the top five globally, alongside India (81%), South Korea (73%), and Kenya (72%). South Africa followed closely with 70%. Why Nigerians support cooperation William Asiko, Vice President for Africa at The Rockefeller Foundation, said the findings reflect Nigeria’s awareness of global interdependence. “Africans want a system of international cooperation that is not only effective but also equitable,” he said. WHO Urges Nigeria to Allocate 20% of Budget to Health

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has called on Nigeria to increase public health spending to at least 20 percent of the national budget to strengthen its healthcare system. The appeal was made by WHO Regional Director, Prof. Mohamed Janabi, on Thursday in Abuja during the National Health Financing Dialogue themed “Reimagining the Future of Health Financing in Nigeria.” Janabi described sustainable healthcare financing as the backbone of resilient health systems, stressing that higher investment would reduce out-of-pocket spending, protect households, and improve access to care through stronger prepayment and pooling mechanisms. “With over 223 million citizens, how Nigeria finances health is critical not just for its people but for Africa’s future. Healthier populations are more productive, more resilient to shocks, and better positioned to drive inclusive growth,” he said. Commending Nigeria’s health reforms, including the Basic Healthcare Provision Fund, the […]

WHO: 400,000 Children Diagnosed with Cancer Annually, Calls for Action to Bridge Survival Gap

As the world observes Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, the World Health Organization (WHO) has revealed that nearly 400,000 children are diagnosed with cancer every year—equivalent to three children every four minutes. WHO highlighted a troubling disparity in survival rates: while over 80% of children in high-income countries survive cancer, only about 20% in low- and middle-income nations live beyond the disease. The organisation described this as “one of the most significant inequalities across cancer types.” The issue was underscored during a national childhood cancer stakeholder workshop in Egypt, where survivors shared their personal journeys. One survivor reflected: “Cancer tried to break me, but the support of my doctors, family, and friends gave me strength. Today, I live to tell my story.” Another added: “The bonds I formed with other children battling cancer gave me hope on the darkest days.” Egypt’s Minister […]
