WHO Raises Alarm Over Rising HIV Infections, Falling Funds

On World AIDS Day 2025, the World Health Organisation warned that the global fight against HIV is at a dangerous turning point as new infections rise while funding and political commitment weaken. The theme for this year, “Overcoming disruption, transforming the AIDS response,” highlights the need to rebuild and strengthen programmes that have been hit by crises and neglect. WHO said an estimated 40.8 million people are currently living with HIV worldwide, with the Eastern Mediterranean Region alone accounting for about 610,000 of them. In that region, annual new infections have almost doubled in less than a decade, jumping from 37,000 in 2016 to 72,000 in 2024, yet fewer than four in ten people know their HIV status and less than a third are on treatment. The organisation warned that dedicated HIV funding is declining, services are being disrupted and […]

FG made four emergency cholera vaccine requests as outbreak worsened — WHO

Nigeria’s Federal Government submitted four emergency requests for oral cholera vaccines to the International Coordinating Group on Vaccine Provision as the country battled a worsening outbreak in 2025, a new World Health Organisation report has revealed. As of 26 October, Nigeria had recorded 22,102 suspected cholera cases and 500 deaths, giving a Case Fatality Rate of 2.3 per cent, with 1,320 cases and 33 deaths reported in just the preceding 28 days. The report situates Nigeria’s crisis within a broader global surge, noting that 565,404 cases and 7,074 deaths were reported across 32 countries in five WHO regions during the review period. The Eastern Mediterranean Region was the worst hit, followed by the African Region, South‑East Asia, the Americas and the Western Pacific. In October alone, 13 African countries reported 13,253 new cholera cases, a drop compared with September, but […]

WHO: 840 Million Women Globally Have Suffered Sexual Violence

A new report by the World Health Organisation (WHO) and UN partners reveals that 840 million women worldwide have experienced partner or sexual violence in their lifetime, a crisis affecting nearly one in three women globally—a rate unchanged since 2000. In the past year alone, 316 million women (11% of those aged 15+) faced physical or sexual violence by an intimate partner. The report, released before the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, also notes 263 million women have faced non-partner sexual violence since age 15, though this figure is likely underreported. WHO’s Dr. Tedros Ghebreyesus called violence against women one of the most “pervasive injustices” and urged governments to scale up prevention, survivor services, and data tracking. However, in 2022, only 0.2% of global aid went to programs addressing violence against women, with support declining further […]

WHO To Vaccinate 40,000 Children in Gaza Amid Ceasefire

The World Health Organization (WHO) announced its plan to vaccinate over 40,000 children in Gaza as a ceasefire allows intensified humanitarian operations. In phase one of the campaign, more than 10,000 children under age three were vaccinated against measles, mumps, rubella, diphtheria, tetanus, whooping cough, hepatitis B, tuberculosis, polio, rotavirus, and pneumonia. Phase one, which started November 9, is being extended; phases two and three are expected in December and January, jointly run with UNICEF, UNRWA, and Gaza authorities. WHO chief Tedros Ghebreyesus said the truce enables expanded health services and vital reconstruction for Gaza’s devastated health system. The UN Security Council recently endorsed the ceasefire plan, brokered by US President Donald Trump, following two years of hostilities that claimed thousands of lives, with over half the deaths in Gaza reported as women and minors.

Kaduna Launches Drive to Immunize 4.2 Million Children

The Kaduna State Primary Health Care Board has begun an integrated measles and rubella vaccination campaign aimed at protecting over 4.2 million children across the state. The exercise, which started on Saturday, covers all 23 local government areas and targets children aged between nine months and 14 years. It is supported by UNICEF, the World Health Organisation (WHO), and other development partners. Speaking at the launch, Dr. Hamza Ibrahim, Director of Disease Control and Immunisation, said the campaign will help reduce the number of “zero-dose” children — those who have never received any vaccination. Kaduna State, he noted, accounts for around 10 percent of the 100 local government areas in Nigeria facing this challenge, with over 4,000 unvaccinated children identified. “Our progress has been made possible through the dedication of community women and the support of our partners,” Ibrahim said. Nigerian Hospital Performs First UroLift Surgery in Nigeria

Nigeria has achieved a major medical milestone as The Prostate Clinic (TPC) in Lagos successfully performed the country’s first UroLift surgery — a breakthrough that could transform prostate treatment and reduce medical tourism. The historic procedure was led by Professor Kingsley Ekwueme, a Consultant Urological, Laparoscopic, and Robotic Surgeon who returned from the diaspora to establish TPC. The achievement positions Nigeria as a growing destination for advanced prostate care. For years, thousands of Nigerian men have traveled abroad for prostate treatments, costing the nation billions annually. Many patients have suffered or even died due to delayed care and limited access to modern procedures at home. During a live demonstration observed by Vanguard, Prof. Ekwueme and his team carried out the UroLift — a minimally invasive surgery designed to relieve prostate enlargement without cutting or removing tissue. Using a telescope inserted […]

One-Third of Europe’s Doctors, Nurses Have Depression – WHO

A new World Health Organization (WHO) report reveals a mental health crisis among healthcare workers in Europe, with one in three doctors and nurses suffering from depression or anxiety. This rate is five times higher than in the general population. The study also found that more than one in ten health workers have had suicidal thoughts. Key factors driving this crisis include workplace violence, consistently long hours, and night shifts. The report highlighted that nurses and female doctors are more likely to experience depression, while male doctors show a higher tendency toward alcohol addiction. Countries like Latvia and Poland reported the highest depression levels, while Denmark and Iceland had the lowest. The WHO is calling for urgent measures, including zero tolerance for violence and reduced working hours, to address the crisis and prevent a looming shortage of nearly one million […]

Nigeria Launches Major Integrated Vaccine Campaign in Abuja

The National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA) has launched a major integrated vaccine campaign in Abuja, targeting children from newborns up to 14 years old. The campaign combines multiple health interventions into a single effort. It includes routine immunizations, measles-rubella vaccines, polio drops, HPV vaccines for nine-year-old girls, and treatments for malaria and neglected tropical diseases. Dr. Muyi Aina, the NPHCDA CEO, stated that this integrated approach will help reach more children, reduce missed vaccinations, and significantly improve child health outcomes across the country. All services provided are free of charge. The first phase of the campaign is running from October 6th to 15th in 19 northern states and Oyo State. A second phase will cover the southern states in early 2026. The initiative is supported by international partners like WHO and UNICEF.

WHO Warns of ‘Alarming’ Rise in Child Vaping Globally

The World Health Organization (WHO) has issued a stark warning about an "alarming" new wave of nicotine addiction, driven by a surge in children using e-cigarettes. In its first global estimate, the WHO found that more than 100 million people now vape. This includes at least 15 million children between the ages of 13 and 15. Data shows that in countries with available information, children are, on average, nine times more likely to vape than adults. The UN health agency accused the industry of aggressively targeting young people by marketing vapes as less harmful, while actually hooking a new generation on nicotine. This trend risks undermining decades of progress in reducing tobacco use. While the number of global tobacco users has dropped, the WHO urged governments to act faster to implement strong tobacco control policies and protect children from the […]

WHO: Suicide Now Third Leading Cause of Death Among Youth

The World Health Organisation (WHO) Director-General, Dr Tedros Ghebreyesus, has urged governments to take urgent action against noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) and mental health challenges, warning that inaction will cost millions of lives and weaken global economies. Speaking in a video message posted on X on Saturday ahead of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York, Tedros underscored the significance of the upcoming High-Level Meeting on NCDs and Mental Health scheduled for September 25. “Noncommunicable diseases, or NCDs, include seven of the world’s top 10 causes of death, including cancers, heart disease, diabetes, and chronic respiratory disease,” he said. “In addition, more than one billion people face mental health conditions, and suicide is the third leading cause of death among young people.” Enormous human and economic toll Tedros stressed that beyond the personal tragedies, the global burden of NCDs […]
