Greater Accra MMDCEs urge government to boost sanitation funding

The Dean of Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) in the Greater Accra Region, John Desmond Sowah, has appealed to government to increase budgetary allocation for sanitation to sustain a clean environment and improve waste management, particularly in the capital region. He made the call during the handover of cleaning tools and equipment to all Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) in the Greater Accra Region by the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs. ISSER Urges Government to Treat Waste Management as an Economic Growth Strategy

In a new policy paper titled “The High Cost of Improper Waste Management and Poor Sanitation on Ghana’s Economy,” the ISSER team argues that effective sanitation systems could generate billions in economic value, create new employment opportunities, and improve environmental outcomes. Zoomlion Ghana Limited has announced a major commitment to support the government’s revived National Sanitation Day initiative with logistics, equipment, and manpower to ensure its sustainability nationwide. Abuja waste contractors threaten strike over 9 months unpaid wages

Contractors responsible for waste management in Abuja have threatened to down tools from September 25 if the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) fails to settle nine months of outstanding payments. In a letter to the Coordinator of the Abuja Metropolitan Management Council, the Association of FCT Solid Waste and Cleaning Contractors (AFSOWAC) said it could no longer guarantee uninterrupted sanitation services without urgent intervention. Essential services at risk AFSOWAC represents contractors overseeing 44 sanitation lots across the FCT, collectively clearing more than 1,000 tonnes of waste daily with over 100 refuse trucks and 60 tippers. Ghana Declares September 6 as National Sanitation Day

Ghana’s Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs has declared September 6 as National Sanitation Day under the Clean-Up Ghana Agenda. The initiative, announced by Minister Ahmed Ibrahim, will see a nationwide cleanup on the first Saturday of every month across all 16 regions. The exercise will serve as a key performance indicator for Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives, with high performers rewarded and poor performers risking removal from office.
