ASUU demands salary review, says lecturers’ welfare is a fundamental right

The Academic Staff Union of Universities, Enugu State University of Science and Technology branch, has called for an urgent review of staff salaries, declaring that lecturers’ welfare is a fundamental right, not a privilege. The union said academics at the institution deserve a pay structure aligned with national benchmarks and the 25–35 per cent wage awards already implemented in other universities.​ ASUU argued that university teachers have endured the same salary scale for about 16 years despite repeated currency devaluations and soaring inflation. It maintained that the current pay package cannot sustain lecturers, stop brain drain or motivate quality teaching and research in Nigerian campuses.​ The union insisted that welfare, including fair remuneration, is a core component of workers’ fundamental rights and central to the survival of public universities.
