INEC moves ward level voter registration for 2027 polls

The Independent National Electoral Commission in Lagos says it will move its Continuous Voter Registration from local government offices to wards on a rotational basis ahead of the 2027 elections. Lagos Resident Electoral Commissioner, Prof Ayobami Salami, told stakeholders at a meeting on the second phase of the CVR that the plan is to reduce voter apathy and make registration easier for eligible residents. He said CVR remains one of INEC’s most important duties because it allows Nigerians to register, transfer their registration, correct details and replace lost or damaged Permanent Voter Cards. Salami disclosed that in the first phase of the exercise, Lagos recorded 139,251 registrations, with 126,668 new voters and 12,583 transfers. Women made up 54 per cent of new registrants, while men accounted for 46 per cent. Youths aged 18 to 39 represented 65 per cent of […]

UNYF Urges INEC Chair to Remove Barriers to PVC Collection

The Unified Nigeria Youth Forum (UNYF) has urged the newly appointed Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Joash Ojo Amupitan, to prioritise accessibility, transparency, and accountability in managing Nigeria’s electoral process. In a statement issued on Saturday in Abuja, the Forum’s National President, Comrade Toriah Olajide Filani, said the credibility of future elections depends largely on how inclusive and accessible voter registration and Permanent Voter Card (PVC) collection become under the new leadership. Filani expressed concern that millions of eligible Nigerians remain unable to obtain their PVCs due to administrative bottlenecks and limited access to registration centres, especially in rural areas. “Despite the introduction of digital systems, many citizens lack internet access or the infrastructure to benefit,” he said. “In Lagos, for example, people queue as early as 2:00 a.m. just to register, yet many still leave […]

Yet only 26.7 per cent turned out to vote,” he noted. He urged young Nigerians to turn their numbers into electoral strength:“Your vote is your voice. Your ballot is your power. With it, you choose leaders, you shape policies, and you decide the direction of your community, your […]
