Ukraine–Russia peace talks in Geneva enter second day amid pressure on Kyiv

Negotiators from Ukraine and Russia were due to begin a second day of U.S mediated peace talks in Geneva on Wednesday, with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy complaining that Washington was putting undue pressure on Kyiv to accept a deal to end the four year war. The talks, hosted at a Swiss government villa on the shores of Lake Geneva, are focused on the highly sensitive question of territory and the possible outlines of a ceasefire and future security arrangements. Zelenskiy said in a late night address that Tuesday’s opening round had been “difficult,” accusing Russia of trying to drag out negotiations that he believes could already be close to a final stage, while also hinting that some U.S proposals went further than he was comfortable with. “Ukraine will not be forced into any agreement that legitimises occupation,” he said, while […]

Russian strikes cut power and heat to thousands in Ukraine

Russia has launched a large overnight barrage of drones and missiles on Ukraine, knocking out power, heat and water for tens of thousands of people in several major cities. Officials said the latest wave is part of an intensified winter campaign targeting the country’s energy infrastructure. In Kyiv, Mayor Vitali Klitschko said around 3,500 apartment buildings were left without heating after critical facilities were hit. More than 100,000 families also lost electricity, with private energy firm DTEK confirming that one of its thermal power plants was struck. Two people were injured in the capital and a residential building was damaged. Ukraine’s air force reported that Russia fired 24 ballistic missiles, one cruise missile and 219 drones during the attack. Air defences shot down or neutralised 16 missiles and 197 drones, but several still reached their targets, causing widespread outages. The […]

‘Only Trump can stop the war’: Ukraine FM pushes to speed up peace talks

Ukraine’s foreign minister Andrii Sybiha says Kyiv wants to speed up U.S. brokered peace talks with Russia, arguing that only U.S. President Donald Trump has the political weight to seal a final deal. In an interview in Kyiv, Sybiha said Ukraine and Russia must hold a face to face leaders’ summit to resolve the toughest remaining issues in a 20 point peace framework that has guided recent trilateral negotiations. He warned that campaigning for the U.S. mid term elections in November could soon distract Washington, so Ukraine is keen to “capitalise on momentum” in the talks. On core territorial questions, he said the sides remain far apart, with Russia demanding that Ukraine formally hand over the remaining 20% of Donetsk it has yet to occupy and Kyiv insisting on regaining control of all its land, including the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant. Zelenskiy says US wants Ukraine war ended by summer

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy says the United States wants Russia and Ukraine to reach a deal to end the war before the start of this summer. He told reporters that after two days of US brokered talks with Russia in Abu Dhabi, Washington proposed holding another round of negotiations in Miami next week and Kyiv had agreed. Zelenskiy said US officials indicated they would likely pressure both sides to keep to a timetable shaped partly by US mid term election politics. He criticised overnight Russian strikes on Ukraine’s power grid and energy facilities, saying Moscow must be stopped from using winter cold as a weapon. According to him, Russia launched more than 400 drones and about 40 missiles in the latest barrage, leaving over 1,000 apartment buildings in Kyiv without heating as families sheltered in metro stations. Zelenskiy said Ukraine […]

Russia batters Ukraine’s power grid with drones and missiles ahead of peace talks

Russia has launched one of its heaviest winter barrages on Ukraine’s energy system, firing around 450 drones and more than 70 missiles across eight regions and knocking out heating for hundreds of thousands of people in sub‑zero temperatures. The overnight strikes hit Kyiv and Kharkiv particularly hard, damaging power and heating infrastructure as well as several apartment blocks, a kindergarten building and other civilian sites. In the capital, authorities said about 1,170 apartment buildings were left without heating, while an air raid alert lasted more than five hours. Energy Minister Denys Shmyhal said facilities that heat water for homes were among the targets, leaving “hundreds of thousands of families, including children” without warmth as temperatures plunged to around minus 20 to minus 25 degrees Celsius. In Kharkiv, Mayor Ihor Terekhov reported that over 800 buildings lost heat after water had […]

Ukraine talks set for next week as deep freeze strains war‑battered power grid

Ukraine, Russia and the United States will hold a new round of talks in Abu Dhabi on February 4–5, President Volodymyr Zelenskiy has confirmed, as diplomacy cautiously resumes nearly four years into the war. The meeting follows an initial round in late January that ended without a breakthrough on core issues such as territory, with Moscow still demanding that Kyiv cede additional land in eastern Ukraine, a condition Ukraine continues to reject. Zelenskiy said Kyiv is ready for “substantive” discussions that bring the country closer to what he called a “real and dignified” peace. The renewed talks come as a brutal cold snap exposes the weakness of Ukraine’s energy grid after repeated Russian strikes. In Kyiv, a major system failure on Saturday cut power to parts of the country and left almost 3,500 apartment blocks temporarily without heating, with about […]

Zelenskiy: Territorial issue on table at UAE trilateral talks

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy says the vital question of territory in Ukraine’s war with Russia will be discussed at U.S.‑brokered trilateral talks in Abu Dhabi on Friday and Saturday. Kyiv faces growing pressure from Washington to strike a peace deal in the nearly four‑year conflict, while Moscow is demanding that Ukraine give up the entire eastern Donbas region before halting its offensive. Speaking in a WhatsApp media chat a day after what he and U.S. President Donald Trump described as positive talks, Zelenskiy said the status of Donbas would be a central focus of the UAE meeting. “The issue of Donbas is key,” he said, adding that the talks would examine how all three sides view the territorial question. An aide to Zelenskiy said discussions would start on Friday evening. A major sticking point remains Russian President Vladimir Putin’s demand […]

US says Putin still aims to seize all Ukraine

US intelligence agencies assess that Russian President Vladimir Putin has not scaled back his military ambitions in Ukraine and still wants to bring the entire country under Russian control. Six sources familiar with recent assessments said the findings also warn that Putin ultimately aims to reassert influence over parts of Europe that once belonged to the Soviet Union. The reports indicate that Russia’s goals remain unchanged even as US, Ukrainian and European negotiators discuss possible frameworks to end the nearly four year war. Current diplomatic proposals under review would leave Russia with far less territory than it now occupies, but there is no sign from US intelligence that Putin is ready to accept such limits. Russia currently controls about 20 percent of Ukraine, including the Luhansk and Donetsk regions, parts of Zaporizhzhia and Kherson, and Crimea, which Moscow claims to […]

Zelenskiy European leaders meet in London on Ukraine peace push

Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskiy and several European leaders are meeting in London as part of a renewed diplomatic push to end the war with Russia. The talks come amid intensified efforts by the United States and its allies to explore a possible path to peace while maintaining pressure on Moscow. The London gathering includes top officials from key European Union states and NATO members who remain central to Ukraine’s military and financial support. Participants are expected to discuss security guarantees for Kyiv, long term defence commitments and conditions under which future peace talks with Russia could take place. U.S. envoys have recently stepped up contacts with European partners and countries in the Global South to gauge support for a potential framework to end the conflict. Western officials insist that any settlement must respect Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, while Russia […]
