Trump move in Venezuela unsettles China’s strategy

Donald Trump’s sudden move against Venezuela has sent shockwaves far beyond Caracas, sharply disrupting a relationship that China had patiently built over decades. Just hours before his arrest in a surprise nighttime operation, Venezuelan president Nicolás Maduro had publicly praised Chinese leader Xi Jinping, calling him “an older brother” and lauding his global leadership. Chinese state media highlighted the meeting, showcasing the depth of ties between Beijing and Caracas, built around hundreds of cooperation agreements. That carefully crafted image was quickly eclipsed by footage of Maduro in US custody, escorted aboard an American warship. China reacted swiftly, joining several countries in condemning Washington’s action. Beijing accused the US of behaving like a “world judge” and insisted that national sovereignty must be respected under international law. Beyond the official statements, however, Chinese leaders are now reassessing their strategy in Latin America […]

Trump Escalates Foreign Policy Pressure Abroad

US President Donald Trump’s second term is increasingly defined by an assertive and confrontational foreign policy, marked by direct warnings to governments across the Americas and beyond. The most dramatic signal came with a US operation in Venezuela, where Trump ordered the capture of President Nicolás Maduro and his wife in a high-risk overnight raid on their Caracas residence. In presenting the move, Trump invoked the 1823 Monroe Doctrine, recasting it as the “Donroe Doctrine” to underline what he described as Washington’s renewed determination to enforce US dominance in the Western Hemisphere. Since then, the White House has issued a series of pointed messages to other countries viewed as falling within America’s strategic sphere of influence. One of the most striking targets has been Greenland. Although the US already operates the Pituffik Space Base on the island, Trump has openly […]

Court officials say the hearing, scheduled for around noon, will be an initial appearance and arraignment on long standing U.S. federal charges. Maduro faces a four count indictment accusing him of leading a 25 year narco terrorism and cocaine trafficking conspiracy that allegedly used Venezuela’s state institutions and security forces to move tons of cocaine into the United States. The charges include conspiracy to commit narco terrorism, conspiracy to import cocaine, and related weapons offences involving machine guns and explosives. He is being held at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn alongside other high profile inmates while awaiting trial. Starmer cautious on legality of US action in Venezuela

Sir Keir Starmer has declined to say whether the United States’ military operation in Venezuela breached international law, stating that he is still awaiting full details of the action. Speaking on the BBC’s Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg programme on Saturday, the prime minister avoided condemning the US strikes, explaining that the situation was evolving and that key facts were still unclear. He stressed, however, that he has consistently supported the principles of international law and would not avoid addressing the issue once more information becomes available. Sir Keir confirmed that the United Kingdom played no role in the large-scale operation carried out by the United States, which resulted in the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro. He also said he had not yet discussed the operation with US President Donald Trump. Later the same day, the prime minister posted on […]
