Trump posts self as ‘acting president’ of Venezuela

US President Donald Trump has shared a doctored image on his Truth Social account describing himself as the “Acting President of Venezuela, incumbent January 2026.” The graphic, styled to look like a Wikipedia page, lists him as both the 45th and 47th US president and claims he now leads the South American country. The post comes days after a US military operation in Caracas that saw Venezuelan president Nicolás Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores captured and flown to New York to face drug and weapons related charges. Trump has said his administration will “run” Venezuela and oversee its oil assets during what he calls a transition period. Despite Trump’s online claim, no international body or foreign government has recognised him as Venezuela’s acting leader. The country’s actual acting president is Vice President Delcy Rodríguez, who has rejected US authority […]

Venezuelans await more prisoner releases

Venezuelans are anxiously waiting for the release of more political detainees after the interim government promised to free a large number of prisoners jailed under former president Nicolas Maduro. Rights group Foro Penal says about 800 to 900 people are still behind bars for political reasons, even though only a small fraction have been freed so far. The releases began days after US forces seized Maduro in Caracas and flew him to New York to face drug trafficking charges. US President Donald Trump praised the move as a smart gesture and cancelled a planned second wave of military strikes on Venezuela, saying the country had shown a desire to seek peace. Interim president Delcy Rodriguez and her brother Jorge Rodriguez, head of the National Assembly, announced that a significant number of Venezuelan and foreign prisoners would be freed. However, they […]

Maduro to face US judge after capture

Deposed Venezuelan president Nicolas Maduro is due to make his first appearance in a United States federal court in Manhattan on Monday, two days after he was seized in a U.S. military operation in Caracas and flown to New York. Court officials say the hearing, scheduled for around noon, will be an initial appearance and arraignment on long standing U.S. federal charges. Maduro faces a four count indictment accusing him of leading a 25 year narco terrorism and cocaine trafficking conspiracy that allegedly used Venezuela’s state institutions and security forces to move tons of cocaine into the United States. The charges include conspiracy to commit narco terrorism, conspiracy to import cocaine, and related weapons offences involving machine guns and explosives. He is being held at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn alongside other high profile inmates while awaiting trial. Donald Trump Warns Venezuela Against Military Jets Near US Warships

Donald Trump has warned that if Venezuelan jets fly over US naval ships and “put us in a dangerous position, they’ll be shot down.” His remarks came after US officials reported that Venezuelan military aircraft flew close to a US vessel off South America for the second time in two days, according to CBS News. The warning follows a recent US strike against what the administration described as a “drug-carrying vessel from Venezuela” operated by a gang, which left 11 people dead. Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro dismissed Washington’s claims, saying that differences between the two countries do not justify a “military conflict.” He stressed, “Venezuela has always been willing to talk, to engage in dialogue, but we demand respect.” Asked by reporters in the Oval Office what would happen if Venezuelan aircraft repeated the maneuver, Trump said Venezuela would be […]
