CIA releases Mandarin video to woo disillusioned Chinese soldiers

The CIA has released a new Mandarin language recruitment video aimed at Chinese soldiers amid turmoil in China’s military leadership. The video, titled The Reason for Stepping Forward To Save the Future, was posted on the agency’s YouTube channel. It follows a fictional Chinese officer who becomes disillusioned with his superiors and secretly reaches out to the CIA. In the narration, he says leaders are protecting their own interests rather than the people and that he cannot let their madness shape his daughter’s future. This is the fifth Mandarin language recruitment advert the CIA has put out since late 2024. Chinese President Xi Jinping has described Taiwan as the most sensitive and significant issue in relations between Beijing and Washington during a phone conversation with US President Donald Trump on Wednesday, according to Chinese state media. China tells US its containment strategy is bound to fail

China has warned that United States efforts to contain its rise are doomed to fail, even as Beijing says it is willing to work with Washington to improve relations. Defence ministry spokesman Jiang Bin told a news briefing on Thursday that “facts have proven that any attempt to contain or block China is doomed to fail.” He added that China is ready to work with the US to promote stable ties ahead of President Donald Trump’s expected visit to China in April for talks with President Xi Jinping. The warning comes days after the US Department of Defense released its 2026 National Defense Strategy, which pledges to “deter China in the Indo Pacific through strength, not confrontation.” The new strategy adopts a softer tone than the previous one under former President Joe Biden, which labelled China as Washington’s most consequential […]

ByteDance deal moves TikTok closer to avoiding US ban

TikTok’s parent company, ByteDance, has signed binding agreements with US and international investors to restructure the app’s operations in the United States, a move aimed at preventing a nationwide ban. In a memo to staff, TikTok chief executive Shou Zi Chew said the deal would establish a new joint venture to run the platform’s US business. The agreement is expected to close on 22 January and would resolve long-standing concerns in Washington over national security and data protection. Under the arrangement, a consortium of investors including Oracle, Silver Lake and Abu Dhabi-based investment firm MGX will collectively own 50% of the new entity. ByteDance will retain a minority stake of 19.9%, while affiliates of existing ByteDance investors will hold the remaining shares. The structure closely follows a framework announced in September, when US President Donald Trump delayed enforcement of a […]
