GTEC orders UCC Vice-Chancellor to step aside

The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has directed Professor Johnson Nyarko Boampong, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast (UCC), to step aside for exceeding the mandatory retirement age. In a statement issued on September 19, 2025, GTEC announced the appointment of Professor Denis Worlanyo Aheto as acting Vice-Chancellor. The Commission explained that Prof. Boampong, who remains in office despite being over 60, is in violation of Article 199(1) of the 1992 Constitution. “Article 199(1) states that a public officer shall, except as otherwise provided in this Constitution, retire from the public service on attaining the age of sixty years,” GTEC noted.
